The Southern Ground-hornbill, Bucorvus leadbeateri or cafer, is one of two species of ground-hornbill and is the largest species of hornbill. It is a large bird, at 90 to 129 cm (36 to 51 in) long and a weight of 2.2 to 6.2 kg (4.8 to 13.6 lbs), with the male considerably larger than the female. It is characterized by black coloration and vivid red patches of bare skin on the face and throat (yellow in juvenile birds). The white tips of the wings (primary feathers) seen in flight are another diagnostic characteristic. The beak is black and straight and presents a casque, more developed in males. Female Southern Ground-hornbills are smaller and have violet-blue skin on their throats.

Bonsoir Patrick,
A very nice portrait of a male Southern Ground Hornbill with a fine pose from this frontal low POV. Technically this is excellent and the frame-filling composition superb.
Thanks for sharing this fine image.

Hi Patrick

A very beautiful capture of this Southern Ground-hornbill - something we don't see everyday here on TN.
The tight composition works well here since the details on the bird are so beautiful and sharp.
The exposure is also well calculated, retaining colors and details in both the darkest and brightest parts of the frame.
On top of everything, the excellent shallow DOF ensures a very nice bokeh in the BG that makes the hornbill stand out even better.
Wonderful work!

Bravo and TFS

Bonjour Patrick !
Valerie.

Hi Patrick
This is a beautiful photo of this special bird. I like the composition and the way the bird is posing for the camera. TFS.

Hello Patrick,
Great you were able to get so close.
I think this one is quite endangered.
I could photograph one with a snake in its bill.
I thought males had red and females orange. Not so apparently.
Very good pose; precise moment.
TFS
