Madagascar Cuckoo-roller
(Leptosomus discolor)

Conservation status: Least concern
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Coraciiformes
Family: Leptosomatidae
Genus: Leptosomus

Binomial name
Leptosomus discolor

The Cuckoo-roller, Leptosomus discolor, is the only bird in the family Leptosomatidae, which is usually considered to be within the order Coraciiformes, which also includes the kingfishers, bee-eaters and rollers. However, there is morphological evidence for a placement within or near to Falconiformes. It was formerly known by the name coural.

This is a medium-sized species of forests in Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. It eats small prey such as insects.

Unlike the true rollers and ground rollers, where the sexes have identical appearance, the male and female Cuckoo Roller have distinctive plumages. Males are mostly velvety grey. The back, tail, and wings are dark shiny green. They have a black eyestripe. Females and young birds are mostly brown marked with darker streaks.

Like most members of the order, cuckoo rollers nest in tunnels in banks, laying about white eggs.

Hi Andrea
Wow, what a lovely bird. I have never seen one of these, so thanks for introducing it to me. It gave you a perfect pose to show off that amazing pink sheen on the edge of the wing and the fill-in flash gave you a nice little catch light in the eye.
The composition is great, the colours are stunning, and the details are very sharp while the DOF plane is clearly visible on the branch. The brighter OOF BG did well to enhance the slightly shady bird and the exposure was managed very well. Since half the bird was in shade you controlled the fill-in flash excellently to bring light to the shady parts yet did not OE on the brighter areas.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Ciao Andrea,
