The Crimson-speckled Flunkey (Utetheisa pulchella) is a moth of the family Arctiidae. It is found in Africa, Southern Europe, Central and Southern Asia and Australia.
The wingspan is 29-42 mm.
The larvae feed on Forget-me-not, Echium, Borago and Anchusa species.

Descrizione
Frafalla gracile dall'aspetto inconfondibile per via delle ali anteriori allungate e ad apice arrotondato, ornate da una miriade di punti rossi e neri su fondo giallo. La disposizione e la grandezza dei punti appare molto variabile, tanto che di fatto non si ritrovano due individui identici. Le posteriori sono larghe con vistose macchie nere submarginali e una stretta frangia bianca marginale. La testa porta occhi grandi e palpi corti e diritti. Le antenne sono filiformi, ciliate nei maschi.

Biologia
La specie migra dalle regioni tropicali e subtropicali nell'Europa meridionale, ove da origine ad una generazione in maggio-giugno ed una in ottobre-novembre, più ricca di individui. Le larve, lunghe circa 3 cm, presentano sul dorso coppie di macchie scure che si accompagnano ad altre giallastre. Caratteristiche sono le rade e lunghe setole che ne rivestono il corpo. Sue piante nutrici sono prevalentemente Borraginacee (Borago officinalis), ma anche Plantaginacee.

Distribuzione ed ecologia
Specie di origine afro-tropicale in grado di effettuare grandi migrazioni e raggiungere regioni lontane come Nord-Europa e perfino America e Australia.
L'individuo da me fotografato era su di un marcipiede dei giardini della Menara a Marrakech,in cui in questa stagione se ne possono trovare a migliaia.

Bonjour Luciano,
Tu étais donc au Maroc et tu nous ramènes bien-sûr des images intéressantes. J'aime beaucoup cette photo qui nous montre la phalène qui sort de l'ombre...et le soleil illumine parfaitement sa petite tête curieuse. Bien vu, une image originale.
