[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Collision of two microcontinents (the Kalahari Craton and the Congo Craton - a craton being a relatively stable part of Earth's crust) 600 MYBP (Million Years Before Present) squashed, metamorphosed and structurally deformed the horizontal strata between them into huge folds and high mountain ranges, here with vertical disposition in the foreground. The next 300 million years saw the mountains being eroded down to this level.

From 320 MYBP until approximately 180 MYBP, horizontal sedimentary strata were again deposited over the whole area as seen in the background here.

Another period of erosion and removal ensued until the occurrence of the Etendeka(Namibia)- Parana(Brazil) volcanic episode from 132 MYBP to 128 MYBP with the stretching of the crust immediately preceding the opening-up of the Atlantic Ocean. A thickness of more than 2000 metres of volcanic strata accumulated during one of the most extensive volcanic episodes in Earth history.

Subsequent erosion, continuing until now, has exposed the structurally deformed strata in the foregrond and the younger, horizontally layered, sedimentary deposits in the background, capped by a thin veneer of Etendeka lava.

First of all...what does it means MYBP? I think your note is superbe, but without know what is MYBP...it get really difficult to understand.Your photo is very nice and your old slides are working very well here! I see that you are in love with geology...good for you!

congratulations for this extraordinary naturalistic document. A picture like this can tell a long story if you have the capacity to interpret the "signs". The geology is a fascinating material. This is a shot of landscape very well done!

Hello Neels,
One needs to be reminded at times about the time that elapses when these rocks are crystalised, eroded, formed and exposed.
An excellent scan of a slide showing, the structure, shapes and break-down of these Namibian rock strata. The colours are excellent and the scene is well composed against a blue sky.
