The desert scenery is Dead Vlei

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dead Vlei
Dead Vlei is a clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia.

Dead Vlei is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching up to 300 meters, which rest on a sandstone terrace. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area.

The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. There are some species of plants remaining, such as salsola and clumps of !nara, adapted to surviving off of the morning mist and very rare rainfall. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to be about 900 years old, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. The wood does not decompose because it is so dry.

Hi Annick,
Nice to see a post from you again.
This place looks so arid, the word 'inhospitable' springs to mind.
You wouldn't want your vehicle to break down out here ;)
An amazing landscape though!
Cheers & TFS
Steve

Goed Weekend,
Peter

Bonjour Annick,

Hi Annick,

Very beautiful composition. I like the mixture of colors that goes from beige, red and blue. The dead sculpture is great.

Thank you for sharing.

Dear Annick,
After my holiday, I am working through the photos uploaded during that time.

Not many member photograph landscapes, and trawling TrekNature for my theme "Our Planet", I came to your Portfolio. I notice, you have not posted anything since June last year - and I hope - this is not due to ill health.

I do also notice frustration in your comment about the watermark on your last photo. It is such a pity, my husband is right: he always maintains, all change is for the worse...

I share your love for Southwest Africa. It is a vast, beautiful country, and the inhabitants VERY friendly. We got fantastic help when in trouble - touring with our old Volkswagen Delivery van in the seventies.

I like in your photo the few thin clouds promising some rain after the long dry season.

The view of the dry vlei bed taking up 2/3 of the image is truly communicating the heat and desolation of this place.

Your photographic technique is just perfect, and your photo is a pleasure to view!

Your notes explain well to viewers - who do not know the country - the situation.

You are very brave to visit Hardap in December! We were there in winter and still found it hot. Although, now I might think differently, after having lived for over 20 years in the Lowveld (NE of South Africa), where it is also very hot and dry e.g. yesterday 41 C.

I wish you a nice evening,
kind regards
Ingrid

PS I am sending you from time to time interesting wild-life photos. If you want me to stop - just say so!
Ingrid
