This photo is from my holiday in Senegal and Gambia last year. It is taken from a motorboat. So the sharpness is the best, but I hope you like it.

The Senegal Thick-knee, Burhinus senegalensis, is a Stone-curlew, a group of waders in the family Burhinidae.

It is a resident breeder in Africa between the Sahara and the equator, and in the Nile valley.

Senegal Thick-knees are medium-large waders with strong black and yellow black bills, large yellow eyes — which give them a reptilian appearance — and cryptic plumage. The scientific name refers to the prominent joints in the long yellow or greenish legs.
They are similar but slightly smaller than the Stone Curlew, which winters in Africa. The long dark bill, single black bar on the folded wing, and darker cheek stripe are distinctions from the European species. Senegal Thick-knee is striking in flight, with a broad white wing bar.

This species has a preference for dry open habitats with some bare ground, preferably near water. It lays two blotchy light brown eggs on a ground scrape. It is most active at dawn and dusk. The song is a loud pi-pi-pi-pi-pi-pi-pi.

Food is insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates. It will also take other small prey.

Aptly named bird, Peter. Though the degree of difficulty was high in shooting this bird from a moving motorboat, the picture does justice to the subject in showing its salient features very well. Definitely worth sharing and thank you for it.

Hello Peter,
Great captured of this bird, nice pose from the bird and lovely natural colours, under difficult circumstance a moving boat makes things more difficult, you have done your best,
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day,
Best Regards,

Hello Peter, another good image for this bird. Good lighting and cleaning of the photo. All the best, Paul

Hello Peter,
Not easy to take shots from a moving boat. This is a fine capture of a Senegal Thick-knee. Te pose suits the frontal POV to show its features with fine sharpness under the circustances. Excellent eye contact and fine natiral colours in a pleasing composition.
Thanks and best regards,

hello Peter,
Another superb species of birds. Very nice details, colors and focus.
Excellent capture and difficult to shot from a motor boat even if he is not moving.

Hi Peter, maybe you work over the limits whit the sharpening, the white of bird seems overexposed, but i know how is difficult to take pics like that and the result is very very nice, and you show us a very interesting and rare specie too. Thanks for share, have a nice evening,Luciano

Hallo Peter,

alweer een vogel aan je verzameling toegevoegd.
Goed laag standpunt en scherpte... ja vind het allemaal hier wel. Scherpte vanaf een moterboot valt echt niet tegen.
Mooie kleuren.

Hi Peter.
I can not believe it was shot from a boat, capture is very good with nice detail. Well composed with perfect POV and DOF. Really like his yellow eyes. Thanks for sharing and for good to note about this interesting bird.
Best regards

Hello Peter,
Very fine close-up of this elegant bird. What I like at this image are perfect POV, fine details, and lovely colours. Well done!

Ciap Peter. Good work for sharpness and light considering the difficult situation.

Hello Peter,
This is a fantastic image of this bird. I can jut imagine that if it was in the dense bush you would not be able to see it as the feathers are almost the same as the dried grass and shrubs. Very well done my friend and thanks for sharing.

Interesting bird Peter!

Welcome to spring! The lines along the eyes and head are tres cool. I like the pattern there. Comparrison to a Curlew yes! I know that bird well. Nice work, if one can call what we do work.

Hi Peter,
really nice portrait of this bird. Excellent sharpness and depth of field. Many details. Very good light conditions.
Have a nice evening,

Fascinating birds, nicely captured. regards yiannis

Excellent capture of this bird with fantastic clarity, focus and splendid colours!!!

Josep Ignasi.

what a nice capture, it is looks like a painting.
fantastic detail and colour.

hallo Peter

Hallo Peter,
Skerp genoeg vir my om die beeld van hierdie pragtige voël te geniet. 'n Plesier om te aanskou. Beste groete.

Peter, what a great shot of this unusual bird. Good job getting this shot. Have a great day, and thanks for your comments, Bill

Hello Peter!

I read note and it's incredible that You captured this from motorboat. Quality is really good and specie is interesting - I'm very surprised that it is very similar specie to Eurasian Stone-curlew, we can meet in eastern Europe ( East Poland and Ukraine)
