Hi friends,
Back from a holiday to Senegal and The Gambia. This is my first photo of that trip. I hope you like it.

The Red-billed Firefinch or Senegal Firefinch (Lagonosticta senegala) is a very small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in almost all parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 10,000,000 km². This species has also been introduced to Egypt, however, it has since become extinct in Egypt.

The Red-billed Firefinch is a small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on grain and other seeds. It frequents open grassland and cultivation. The nest is a large domed grass structure with a side entrance, built low in a bush, wall or thatch into which 3-6 white eggs are laid. The nest of this species is parasitised by the Village Indigobird.

The Red-billed Firefinch is 10cm in length. The adult male has entirely scarlet plumage apart from brown wings. The bill is pink, and there is a yellow eye-ring. Females have uniformly brown upperparts and buff underparts. There is a small red patch in front of each eye, and the bill is pink.
This widespread and abundant species is often found around human habitation, often with other species such as the Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, and its soft queet-queet call is a familiar African sound. The song is a rising chick-pea-pea-pea.

Hallo Peter
Great to have you back and I am sure you are going to spoil us rotten with some lovely holiday picks. What a compassionate image you share as your 1st after your trip. The emotion captured here is just great. One can see how much the one Firefinch is enjoying the attention, eyes closed out of sheer pleasure. A very unpretentious and most innocent moment captured. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Peter,
Welcome back from Senegal and Gambia!
A superb start in your series from that area in this tender capture of a pair of red-billed Fire Finches.
The timing in capturing this loving moment between these two is superb and the technical quality excellent.
I like the POV against a nice neutral BG.
Nice to see this species that we also saw in Gambia on the hotel lawn together with other finch species, but all my photos are analogue!
Thanks and best regards,

Hola Peter

Gracias por el comentario.

Gran imagen que desprende amor por todos sus costados.

Una toma muy bonita de estos dos pajaros, que has conseguido en un oportuno momento, cuando ellos se estan acariciando.

Un saludo Antonio

Hello Peter,
It is a rare occurence when you can get both the male and the female of a bird species in one frame, let alone displaying such excellent detail, color, exposure and in a great pose. They truly look like two love-birds lost in themselves and paying no attention to the world around them.

beautifully captured, lovely colors

Hi Peter,
A great moment in nature well captured and professionally composed.Nice details and your exposure has really brought out the two love birds sensationally.Great one well taken!

Hi again,
Very tender shot of this couple of Red-billed Firefinch. The management of light is excellent and I like the inclusion of the branch on the left. Nice colours too. Cheers,

What a lovely sight!!!
Very detailed. Sharp.
Excellent clarity.
The focus is superb!!!
Bravos are in order.
Mario with most friendly greetings from a very cold Canada.
P.S. Saw a similar species in Angola a long time ago. Had no camera then.

Dear Peter,
Thanks so much for your contribution to this theme. The closed eyes signify utter bliss, I would say.
Thanks for sharing!
It is photos like this which prove my point that TN is mainly about learning about nature...
Your notes are well researched.

Have a nice evenin
