[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
To make a real good photo in Senegal and The Gambia in this time of the year is very difficult. On the coast the tempatures were between 30 and 35 degrees. The air was foggy, so the chance for clear photos was small. The sky was grey.
A few kilometres from the coast temperatures were rising from 40 till 45 degrees. Very hot. And the light was very harsh. Almost never a clear sky through the dust.
A lot of my photos are a bit overexposed.
But after a bit of photoshopping in the raw extention some photos are good enough to place here.
I think this is one of them.
This photo is taken from a boat.

The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where replaced by the closely related Rufous Night Heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Adults are approximately 64 cm (25 in) long and weigh 800 g (28 oz). They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey. These are short-necked and stout herons.

The breeding habitat is fresh and salt-water wetlands throughout much of the world. The subspecies N. n. hoactli breeds in North and South America from Canada as far south as northern Argentina and Chile, N. n. obscurus in southernmost South America, N. n. falklandicus in the Falkland Islands, and the nominate race N. n. nycticorax in Europe, Asia and Africa. Black-crowned Night Herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or reedbeds. Three to eight eggs are laid.

This heron is migratory in the northernmost part of its range, but otherwise resident (even in the cold Patagonia). The North American population winters in Mexico, the southern United States, Central America, and the West Indies, and the Old World birds winter in tropical Africa and southern Asia.

These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night or early morning. They primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammal and small birds. During the day they rest in trees or bushes. N. n. hoactli is more gregarious outside the breeding season than the nominate race.

Good classical capture, Peter! Lovely clean background ! Under the current difficult circumstances of taking the picture the result is pleasant I think!

Hello Peter,
You did pretty well in spite of the stifling heat! Great focus on the red eye and very good timing. I expect the air pollution has got much worse in Gambia since we were there some years back!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Peter. I am sure it was differcult to get good picture under such hot weather . But it will still be interesting to see the different birds or animals from you trip. As you say this is still a fine in flight picture taken from a boat as well. Good detail of the under wings. The red eye stands out so well . TFS

Hi Peter,
excellent presentation of lively contrast. i like the brown against the light blue sky as background.
The sharpness is so excellent and the transluscent is so wonderful.
Lively and well presented composition.

Hi Peter,

Great capture! The timing on this one is good, and the details are fair. The composition is attractive. The colours appear to be a bit too light, except for the bird's eye. From your notes, you had a tough time with exposures. I did a WS to try to reduce the brightness and enhance the colours. TFS.

Hello Peter,
Two image, two continents but the same specie- you took the picture of a juvenile and I took one of an adult. Great details and wonderful eye contact. Well done!

Hello Peter
