[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This species of lapwing/plover is NEW ON TN. There are several species of lapwing here on TN, but I canít find a Black-headed Lapwing here.
The quality of the photo is in my opinion not superb, but itís worth posting this new bird. I took this photo from an open jeep.

The Black-headed Plover or Black-headed Lapwing (Vanellus tectus) is a large lapwing, a group of largish waders in the family Charadriidae. It is a resident breeder across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia, although it has seasonal movements. It lays two or three eggs on a ground scrape.

These are conspicuous and unmistakable birds. They are medium-large waders with a black head other than a white forehead, lower face and bands across the rear head and nape. There is a wispy black crest like Northern Lapwing and the bill and legs are red. The tail is white, tipped black.

In flight, Black-headed Plover's upperwings have black flight feathers and brown coverts separated by a white bar. The underwings are white with black flight feathers.

This species is a common breeder in wet lowland habitats close to water. It often feeds in drier habitats, such as golf courses and grassy scrub, picking insects and other invertebrates from the ground.

Black-headed Plover has a metallic tink-tink call.

Hello Peter,
This is well worth posting!
Ok, it's not your best quality but taken from an open Jeep without much time makes this shot of a Black-headed Plover a fine one. Congratulations on this new species for TN!
The clarity, pose, and colours are great. I took a nice one of this species on the golf course in Gambia, but it was not digital.
Thanks fot this fine reminder!
Best regards,
Ivan

Hi Peter,

That Black-headed Lapwing reminds me very much of the Killdeer that we see throughout Canada and the US; they are also plovers. The colours of the bird in your photo are great. As you said, some aspects of the quality of the photo could be a bit better, but some are very well done. And, you managed to get the shot, and contribute a very interesting species record. TFS.

John

Hello Peter,
What a stunning shot of this beautiful bird. The black and white head in contrast to the body really captures your attention. Nicely composed showing good detail and gorgeous colors. Thank you for posting this unusual Plover image.
It's funny but the first thing I thought about when I viewed this bird was how much it reminds me of our Killdeer in it's upright standing posture.
