Sometimes you can’t get a bird good enough on a photo. So I had quarrel with this species. I saw it in different places and I made several photos. But none was the ‘ideal’ photo. The birds don’t want cooperate.
But because it’s a NEW BIRD FOR TN I present two photos of this beauty. In the workshop a bird in frontal (not sharp) pose.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek (Laniarius barbarus), also known as the Common Gonolek, is a medium-sized passerine bird in the bushshrike family. It is a common resident breeding bird in equatorial Africa from Senegal and Democratic Republic of Congo east to Ethiopia.

It frequents dense undergrowth in forests and other wooded habitats. It is not as extremely shy as some other bushshrikes, and can sometimes be seen on watered hotel lawns. The nest is a cup structure in a bush or tree into which two eggs are laid.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek is 22 cm long with a long tail and short wings. The adult is a stunning bird, although easily overlooked as it lurks in undergrowth. It has solidly black upperparts apart from its golden crown, and scarlet underparts other than a buff-yellow undertail. The legs are dark. Sexes are similar, but juveniles are paler and duller.

This species has duetted calls, with a fluted too-lioo overlapped by a rattling ch-chacha.

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek feeds on insects located in bushes or on the ground.

Hello Peter,
I also remember waiting for and chasing the Gonolek before I could take a picture of it in Gambia. At last I achieved one at a distance but it was analogue.
This is a great capture, the POV showing most of its features with fine colours and sharpness against a fine contrasting BG. I like the composition between the two large branches too.
Thanks for this fine reminder of a beautiful bird. I rember the call duetted by the female too.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

Hello Peter,
wow.what a lively view of the bird with lovely red, black, yellow body. The pose is so innocent and you have shown it very nicely.I like the shallow depth that gives a dramatic composition.

Ps. Thanks for the amusing comment in my last post:DDD

Hello Peter,
This seems to be a difficult picture to make, and you have managed very well!.
The colors are a bit dull, I know the name of this lack, but sometimes it happens in my photos and then I fix the levels in post-processing.
Either way, it's a good photo and a beautiful bird species!
