Hawksbill Turtle going back to Sea after egg-laying on Cousin Island

The largest hawksbill turtle (Erechmotelys imbricata) population remaining in the Western Indian Ocean occurs in Seychelles, where an estimated 1,230-1,740 females nested annually in the early 1980s. Since then, however, populations have declined due to widespread harvesting of nesting females during the 30 years prior to 1994, when a total legal ban on turtle harvest was implemented. An exception to the downward trend is the population at Cousin Island Special Reserve, managed by Nature Seychelles.

Turtle monitoring has been in operation on Cousin since 1972. Cousin has therefore the longest running monitoring program for hawksbill turtles in the world, and results are compatible with wider national turtle initiatives (under the initial guidance of, and data analysis by, Jeanne Mortimer). Up to 120 hawksbill turtles nest annually on Cousin Island. Numbers have increased over the last 20 years against a backdrop of historical population decline in Seychelles and Western Indian Ocean.

Recent studies including one on the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has shown that only Cousin has little or no poaching compared to other MPAs . The success of Cousin in controlling poaching is due in part to its small size, but also to the local management’s unique relationship with local communities and fishers, and both direct and indirect economic benefits to the local economy through eco-tourism.

Beautiful scene, Tom!
This mother turtle looks like she is bearing the weight of the world on her shell.
No doubt had an exhausting night digging a hole and laying all her eggs.
Great low POV against a clean and natural BG.
