White-faced Whistling Duck ( Dendrocygna viduata)

This picture was recently taken at the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary.

The White-faced Whistling Duck, Dendrocygna viduata, is a whistling duck which breeds in sub-Saharan Africa and much of South America.

This is an abundant species. It is largely resident, apart from local movements which can be 100km or more. It nests on a stick platform near the ground, and lays 8-12 eggs. Trees are occasionally used for nesting.
The habitat is still freshwater lakes or reservoirs, with plentiful vegetation, where this duck feeds on seeds and other plant food.

This species has a long grey bill, long head and longish legs. It has a white face and crown, and black rear head. The back and wings are dark brown to black, and the underparts are black, although the flanks have fine white barring. The neck is chestnut. All plumages are similar, except that juveniles have a much less contrasted head pattern.

This species is gregarious, and at favoured sites, the flocks of a thousand or more birds arriving at dawn are an impressive sight. As the name implies, these are noisy birds with a clear three-note whistling call.
The White-faced Whistling Duck is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

Hello Jan Hendrik,
You caught the duck in a perfect flight-position. The feet seem to be in a dancer's position, the wings are like the ones of an angel. And a funny black and white head, like a clown. Amazing mixture!
Well seen
Thanks and best regards

Hi Jan

What a splendid in-flight shot from you!
I'm delighted by the sharpness of every detail here and by your ability to capture this duck in such a terrific pose. The way you froze the action here is great and the composition you created around that is lovely.
This White-faced Whistling Duck is a charming species, one that i don't believe we've seen a lot here, so thanks for sharing all that cool info about it, too.

Hope you are doing well.:)

Jan, this is an excellent inflight capture.
I've yet to get a large bird like this inflight, just don't get out enough. Poor excuse, I know :)
Very dynamic wing forward pose, and the POV, detail, color, framing, and exposure are very good.

What an action pic! I have been to Austin Roberts many times and got some good pics of the White Faced Ducks but not an action shot like this!

The sharpness and detail are excellent for a moving subject. The OOF BG, Comp, POV and detail captured are wonderful.

Hi Jan Hendrik

Nou wanneer eendag sien ons weer 'n nuwe posting vanaf jou vreemdeling? Ek hoop
dit gaan nog voor die wind en dat die nuwe jaar jou voordelig behandel.

This is a magic posting of the in-flight White-faced Whistling Duck. Unfortunately I can't
see the camera settings, but apart from the obvious range of the DOF it also seem like
there was a bit of a panning action that assisted with the lovely OOF and isolated BG. I
like the high visibility of sharp details on the feet, facial area and the frozen wings.

Well done and TFS.
