I have captured this 'Blue Heliotrope' (Heliotropium amplexicaule) in our yard. Very small weed. You can see it is surrounded by grass. I wanted an eye level shot to get a good background. Light was harsh.

Heliotropium amplexicaule is a noxious weed contains Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). The amount of PAs in Blue Heliotrope is much higher than common Heliotrope. Continual ingestion by live stock of large amount of heliotrope plants (either fresh or dried) or of their seeds, can cause liver damage and death.

Have a look how it affects on animals:

(1) Horses
CLINICAL SYMPTOMS: Weigh lose, dull, depressed, uncoordinated, wander aimlessly, death
PATHOLOGY: Liver damage and secondary brain damage

(2) Pigs
CLINICAL SYMPTOMS: Death
PATHOLOGY: Liver, kidney and lung damage

(3) Cattle
CLINICAL SYMPTOMS: Depressed, unpredictable bouts of aggression, death
PATHOLOGY: Liver damage and secondary brain damage

(4) Sheep/Goat
CLINICAL SYMPTOMS: Can accumulate copper, which can cause death
PATHOLOGY: Liver damage

Hello Sri – Impressive picture of this Heliotropium amplexicaule. Excellent view showing us all the details of the inflorescence. Colours from the flowers properly caught.

Technical achievement

• Excellent focus on the whole inflorescence
• Perfect exposure with an appropriate choice of aperture/speed and iso
• Perfect depth of field and sharpness
• Good contrast
• Excellent sharpness showing all the details of the flowers
• Precise white balance and exact colour rendering
• Good post processing without any excess
• Good background blur, making the Ibis very visible.

Impact

• Interesting picture showing the flower in a natural situation; very good capture.
• Efficient framing and composition with an appropriate disposition of the subject in the middle of the frame. I appreciate the treatment of the background giving a dynamic aspect to your photography: I looks like as if the plant is “emerging” from the ground in the middle of the grasses; congratulations.

Thank you for the sharing.

Have a good day.

Philippe
