Bark Stink bug (Coenomorpha)

Identification

Body length of up to 20mm (this one was about 10mm)and the body is flattened, brown or streaked with grey. The nymphs (as in this shot) is oval, convex and covered in a loose bluish white waxy layer.

I found this youngster in an acacia tree in my garden. It was early morning and he was enjoying the rays of the sun which warmed him up.

The camera settings:

Focal Length:300mm
F Stop: F/20
Shutter Speed:1/80
ISO: 400
Tripod: Yes
Flash: Diffused Off Camera

Besides a diffused flash, I used a reflective sunshield to reflect sunlight from a lower angle onto his underparts

About the composition - I tried moving him a bit more out of the center of the image, but losing the thorns did not look nice - If it any help, he is 1.15 mm off center to the left :)

Due to a lot of pressure at the office, my time to research the specimens I am posting is severely limited, so I will only post the basics until the projects have been completed. We are doing a complete IT infrastructure upgrade in preparation for SAP and this will be completed at the end of December. Please bear with my notes until then.

Funny bug. Good capture, although I would have preferred the right antenna to be angled slightly differently. But I guess it's not easy to ask him isn't it?

I'm new to this list, how do I give points?

What a funny chap you've found here, he looks as if he's wearing a full tweed suit ;-))
Your work with flash and diffuser paid off nicely, well done.

Beautiful shot, Japie. The textures are superb, and you managed very well with the light, that reflective sunshield worked perfectly. I love the acacia spines with the shadows.
Focal lenght 300mm means that you did not use macro, but zoom?
Thanks for posting.

This is BRILLIANT Japie! This is my favourite of your shots. I love it. The composition and details are excellent. You have used the flash to prefection.

It kinda looks like a fluffy toy.

Well done, points tomorrow.

WOW! This guy is begging to be overexposed but you did very well. It's a new one for me too, so you get extra credits. :) Japie, every here are just spot on. TFS.

Tal vez la textura y colorido del insecto son los responsable de que la nitidez no sea perfecta... pero la calidad de la captura es muy buena.
Buena composicion y una nota que expresa lo que nos sucede a muchos de nosotros.

Perhaps the colorful and texture of the insect is the accountable for
charge of which the clearness is not perfect... but the quality of the capture is very good.
Good composition and one note that expresses what it happens us to many of us.

hi Japie
superbe insecte ca texture est si etrange, il semble couvert de poussiere !
le support aussi est tres jolie avec ca teinte orangée.
i like it ;)

Great macro, Japie. I hope you did not get too close to him .....

Japie, Odd looking thing! I like Pauls remark about the "fluffy toy"! It looks like it would be insulated well from the cold!! Like the comp. with it astride the branch, split with blue sky. Great detail & you used your diffused flash & reflective shield with great results.. Great job!!

Hoi Japie,
Prachtig man die harige beestje. Fantastic taken, good colours, and yes the details are lovely. The contrast and the dof are great, goed gedaan Japie.

Great macro of this Mr. Stinky. While I have encountered these fellows before, I had no idea that they were fuzzy when young. Well done.

Fantastic macro Japie. Iv never seen anything quite like this insect before it. Its texture is most unusual.
