Elegant Grasshopper
Zonocerus elegans

This elegant fellow belongs to the family Pyrgomorphidae or Foam Grasshoppers. It emits a nauseating yellow fluid when disturbed. Livestock avoid eating from bushes infected with these critters.

They are medium sized (28-50mm) with a black head and antennae with orange rings. They are a pest of irrigation farmers in RSA, damaging vegetables, fruit trees and grasslands. In tropical areas they infest cotton, cocoa, coffee and a variety of other crops.

Eggs lay in the ground for 6 months, hatching in spring. They reach maturity in 75 days. The males also produce sounds during aggressive interaction.

I saved some bugs for Paul. I know he likes ‘em. Hope you like ‘em too.

Wow, what a colourful chap, wish we got them in these colours up here ;-))
Razor sharp, good light and colours, good DOF & nice diagonal feel created by the grass bending his way, too.

WOW, Gerhard, this one is great. This looks from another planet, and more with the "foam" feature :D
I am impressed how well that zoom works instead of macro. Great capture. P.D.: and congrats for your 4000´s.

Great shot Gerhard.
Stunnig colours, great sharpnes and very nice composition.

Incroyable composition. Les couleurs extras. le phocus sur cette sauterelle est nette et parfait. FÉLICITATIONS !

What amazing colours. What amazing photographic skill you have.
This is an amazing shot, so much detail, perfect light and composition; a truely captivating image.

Very interesting shot. I like the parallel lines of the branches in the same direction as the insect itself.

Gerhard, This must be the most "elegant" looking hopper anyone has ever seen. I like the composition with the grass & hopper at this 45 degree angle. Very good sharpness & detail. Congratulations on your benchmark..but who's counting right! ;-))

OK, so the 100 - 400 can be used for close-ups as well. The sharpness and exposure here is excellent. I like the diagonal composition.

Very well done and thanks for posting.
