Zitting Cisticola
Cisticola juncidis

Also known as: Fantailed Cisticola, Afrikaans: Landeryklopkloppie, German: Zistensänger, French: Cisticole des joncs.

cisticola: Derives from Cistus, the botanical genus of the rock rose (from Greek kistos, the rock rose, derived from kist( a box or capsule, often woven from slips or twigs); Latin colo, to inhabit. Clinning (1989) suggests that the name is derived from Latin cisterna, a reservoir, and incola, an inhabitant, referring to an inhabitant of wet places; he also gives cista, a basket woven of twigs, and may refer to the type of nests built by cisticolas.
juncidis: Latin, of the rushes (from iuncus, a rush).

These Cisticolas are very small birds measuring 10-12 cm; above tawny buff, streaked blackish brown (paler in winter, streaks more distinctly continuous); rump plain bright tawny; below white, washed yellowish buff on breast and flanks (breast white when breeding); tail medium, fanned in flight, blackish brown, tipped black and white.

They are found throughout Africa, Soutern Europe, South Asia, Australia. These birds are widespread in South Africa. One can find them in open grassveld, vleis, cultivated fields (lucerne, Eragrostis , wheat), fallow lands, edges of cultivation, airfields, golf courses. Found usually solitary or in pairs. They forage low down in grass and weeds, or on ground; when disturbed perches on thin stem, flicking tail sideways; flight bouncing, with fanned tail jerking at each bounce. Snaps wings loudly when alarmed near nest, even while carrying building material or food.

They feed on small insects (mainly grasshoppers).

To ID a LBJ (little brown job) is never easy. In this instance I had to call on Willie, Callie and Callie’s vetenarian friend Phillip to get this on ID’d. Thanks for you contributions. I hope you like it.

Hello Gerhard, I found some pictures of your bird here.
Yours is a winner. No nits. I like very much the impression of thoughtlessness which gets free of it. A bird-harvester.
Thanks my friend.

Everything is exellent!
I love this picture. Very well done, cute, with wonderful pose - just perfect!

Very, very nice. The composition is very strong with the bird clinging to the angled perch. The details and colours are great too. Thanks for posting.

Well done Gerhard.

At first glance I thought...oh yeah...a sparrow.Taking a closer look,it's very different.Just when I thought I knew every bird in the world (Ha Ha).This is a little beauty...very little.
Another brilliant shot and a great supporting note as usual. Thanks Gerhard.

Wonderful capture. Razorsharp details. Perfect colors. Excellent!

Hi Gerhard
A lovlely little LBJ, fat and happy, and as difficult to ID as ever. Very nice pose, you did a great job!
I like them Wednesday legs - whens dey gonna break?

Very good capture of the lbj. Irecently found this species for the forst time during my trip to the Darwin area in northern Australia. The country they inhabit makes getting a good shot nearly impossible. Thus I appreciate the skill you've shown here in capturing this small bird. I like the compositiona and sharpness. A really good job.

Excellent work Gerhard! Superb details, POV, pose, light & composed well..This diagonal dried grass perch is a nice touch also..Very well done!

This is very good, Gerhard, and precisely on a branch of what has given it it's name. Looks like a delicate oriental watercolor painting. Wonderful illustration of this fine bird. Everything is attractive here. A favorite!

Almost 3D, perfect shot sharp, clear and great BG.
Well done.

Excellent shot Gerhard,
Good clear sharp details and good clarity. Nice composition and colours.
Good pose and good notes too.
Thanks for posting

Great shot Gerhard, lovely composition with great diagonal.
Good subtle colours, crystal clear, great background.
My only nit is the top left looks as if something has been cloned out.
Thanks for sharing.

Gerhard there's no question your photographic skills is just getting better and better. For me this is a very polished post everything is just perfect. Composition, effective DOF and sharpness and very pleasant presentation. Very well done.

Gerhard, very nice diagonal composition, great pov and dof. The bird is cute, and the blurred bg hightlights it.

Another brilliant post.

Sweet and charming is what comes to mind when I look at this one. I love the colors, and the composition is Perfect in my opinion. The delicate little feet clutching the tiny strands of grass is so nicely portrayed. WOW.....super photo!
