For Paul
The Red-knobbed Coot - Fulica cristata 41 - 46 cm is a very aggressive bird, and there is always some altercation wherever one encounters these birds on the water. They have messed up some nice photo opportunities for me in many instances in the past, but they also provide some nice shots when not in such a belligerent mood. The main difference between our coot and the one you see in Europe is the two off red “cherries “ in his “hair”. These two red knobs swell and become more prominent in the breeding season. They are vegetarians, and can be found on nearly any piece of suitable open water in SA. The call is a harsh, metallic “claak” maybe they would have been into Heavy Metal, were they musicians.

Picture taken fairly early in the morning at Marievale Ramsar Wetlands, near Springs, on the East Rand of Gauteng. Just a small funny about this Gauteng where we live. We have a GP as the last letter on our motorcar number plates, denoting Gauteng, but this is also known as Gangster’s Paradise. If you unscramble the acronym Gauteng, you get : get a gun! Both these are very aptly descriptive of this part of SA, so it is not only the coots that are a problem.

Hello Callie! Wonderful shot. You even know how to make an arty-pic of a Coot. I love the reflection in the water. Thumbs up for composition and POV composition. Well done! TFS.

Well done on this shot. The reflection is well captured and composed within the frame with the blue sky. Interesting picture. Well done on the composition and details.

Brilliant post Callie. I'd never seen the cherries before. I have a few coots to post sometime.
Thanks for this one. Cheers, Steve.

Lovely shot Callie, they are very similar to ours with the addition of the red knobs and the beak looks bluer than our version. Very nice composition, especially with the reflection. Good shot. Thanks for the dedication.

Great POV and colours, nice reflection. Good details in the blacks, but I'd have liked the eye to be a bit more visible. However, these chaps are hard to shoot ;-))

Callie, A great reflection & pose! Vertical frame works very well IMO..Very well done!!

I still find them impossible to expose correctly. The white spot are either too bright or the blacks too dark. You did an exceptional job. Lovely compo, including BG and reflections. Fantastic capture, Callie.

Oh! I am late... Congratulations on hitting 5k.
You know Callie, your fame is total here.
I sometimes have the impression that you could simply write "Callie" on a blue BG with a frame all around and post the whole and that you would harvest a heap of comments laudatory as: magnificent image, perfect composition, rich colours, magnificent point of view, excellent subject in its natural environment, colossal wealth of details, beautifull water reflection, etc. But it is only an impression... I hope so ;-)
Thanks my friend for this magnificent unknown bird for me. I only wish to express my gratitude with any simple words and good photos also.
p.s.: I believed that it was only the human beings who were followers of 'Piercing'!

Great light and composition.

"Beanbags on hide window ledge"? Could that be what I am doing wrong? So, the secret is out, and now we mere mortals, can perhaps experience some of the remarkable successes that you have shared with us! I wish it were that easy, even if I did know what a hide window ledge was... Great photo. Thanks for the many and congratulations on your 5K milestone.
