[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Since shooting this picture,I have shot thousands of photographs, but this particular bird has not yet crossed my part since then, nearly 3 years ago. I am still waiting for a frog, correctly exposed, in the bill of any bird, and me being able to be there to see it and shoot it.

This is a Black Heron, a not so frequently seen bird, one on the wishlist of many a birder. I have first seen one in Botswana in 1995. That was a life changing trip. We saw just over 165 birds on a ten day trip, and I was hooked. This is where my love affair with nature was rekindled, something I have lost in the hustle and bustle of city life. Since then, my SA bird checklist, has nearly reached 500 birds, and I am now more fascinated by our feathered friend than in my youth or when I rediscovered the magic of the African bush.

The Black Heron is basically the identical bird as the Little Egret in all aspects, safe for being black where the other is white. It has also a peculiar way of foraging – see the WS, of throwing out its wings and making a canopy. There are several theories as to why they do this, a plausible one being the yellow feet acting as lures and the shadow creating a false sense of security, into which prey like fish or frogs are lured. The WS is just a record shot, the proper shot is still on the wishlist.
One of the first successful pictures I was able to nail, using Big Bertha and the trusty old Nikon F90X. Aperture was around F5.6 and the only thing I really remember was underexposing by 1EV. Taken at 600 mm at Marievale main picnic spot hide.Unfortunately, the flatbed scan looses a lot of quality.
I am in debt at the moment here in TN, and will try to catch-up again this weekend, sorry for not commenting.

I may be able to please you sometime this week...I have a couple of pictures of a grey heron with fish...I will post one for you although the light in the UK at this time of year does not compare to the light in your photo Callie. Very nice composition and what a capture. Great shot, well done.

Excelent capture, SIR, Callie. What a beauty and poor little frog. It's the Circle of life.
Well done on this composition.

Mike

Just wondering, is Afrikaans a sublanguage of Dutch.?

Toujours THE BEST:Great.

Wonderful Callie! Just perfect! You did some unusual! I'm impressed. Thank you very much!

Great picture Callie.
Amazing colours, black heron and blue BG but what I really like is the yellow feets. Very good pose, exposure and details.
Excellent work my friend.

I'm waiting for macro's with your new toy ;-)

Thanks Callie for this unique shot of a black heron. I didn't know they existed. Nice shot.
And thanks for the information on Afrikaans roots you gave to Mike.

Great capture Callie! I have seen a little blue heron here that looks a lot like your black heron. I have not been able to get one in my camera to my liking yet. And certainly not one eating a frog! Bravo!

Oh, the chap with the yellow knitted socks, it's well I remember him ;-))
Impressive colours, good details in the black feathers, good POV - a nice catch for both of you ;-)

Lovely shot Callie, I have seen herons with frogs many Times but never managed to get a shot, let alone a well exposed shot.
Great light, colours and texture to this shot.
Great note also.

Very good capture - the details are realy crisp, and despite the long telephoto, great depth of field. Very interesting to see this variant on the heron theme.

Awesome photo Callie. What a great moment you have captured here. Superb depth of field and composition. Bravo!

Trés belle oiseau et bonne photo nature. La composition et les couleurs sont parfaite. Bonne prise de vue et belle action de l'oiseau. Félicitations !

Yuk... frogs legs are on the menu... next it will be escargot. Well, a Herons gotta eat! Good colours. The yellow feet add a nice contrast. Nice work Callie. TFS.

If this has lost quality, then I can only imagine how good the original was. I was shooting herons yesterday and didn't get anything as good as this.
Great to get one with a frog in its mouth.
This is a very different bird to ours.Hopefully I'll get a shot good enough to show one day.

Goede morgen Callie,
Deze reiger is bij ons niet te zien, maar het is een mooie, en blijkbaar ook een goede vanger van puiten, hij is prachtig gescan bijna zonder verlies, mooi gedaan.
Groeten uit het koude en besneeuwde Vlaanderen,
John.

Colours on your picture are amazing. I love blue BG and dark Heron in yellow socks! Great moment but I wouldn't like to be in frog's skin ;-) Africa at its best.

Sorry, pts later.

Black on blue mood.
Excellent picture you took, Callie.
"over 165 birds on a ten day trip", did you had a camera at that time?
I have a neighbour who went to Phinda recently. She liked her journey. As I wrote to Gerhard, your country is an elixir of Youth! She spoke to me about her journey with this glance amazed as that of a child who discovers extraordinary things. And she is about 60 years old.
Have a great week-end and thanks for this post: two rare pictures. You know that I sample and savor each of the words of your notes?
