Fulvous duck
Dendrocygna bicolor

Also known as: Fulvous Whistling-duck, Fulvous Tree Duck.

This duck is rust-brown with white upper tail coverts and white streak marks on the side. White streaks on the neck are not usually visible. The back is dark with darker stripes. The beak is dark grey and the legs and feet are grey with a hint of blue. Fulvous ducks squeal when they take to the wing.

They fly in irregular formations and tend to be rather nomadic. Among the most cosmopolitan of all birds, it breeds in North and South America, Africa and Asia in a variety of habitats from lowlands to 5000'. In North America, the northern extreme of the range is Texas (Howard’s neck of the woods) and Louisiana. In some areas this duck is considered a pest to crops.

These birds rarely perch in trees and never nest in them. The nest is usually made of aquatic vegetation trampled down to form a platform above the water. Overhanging grass may conceal the top of the nest. 12-17 whitish eggs are laid.

They are gregarious, sometimes flocking with White-faced Ducks and spends much of the day loafing in large groups on the shoreline. Very shy and wary, and feeds mainly by diving, also dabbles or up-ends in shallow water.

I took the photo a while ago and was not used to keeping the exif info. I will try to update the info from home this evening. It was taken in heavy overcast conditions. Hope you like it.

Nice duck. Good detail. Would have trimmed, not too much, on the left. Good pose of the duck too.

Very nice shot, great pose and good POV. It could be a little brighter.
Well done.

So, I must say, that this is very good duck's photo. I'm little bored of ducks on TN but yours is great Gerhard. Strongest point is composition with much space and bird's pose. Not boring and common for sure!

She's a beauty, with such long fine legs too! Amazing colours. Great composotion, fine detail. Imho I'm not sure about the bg, but it's probably down to the overcast day. A lovely shot. Thanks for posting.

The light, colors, and BG on this shot are very pleasing, Gerhard. Sharp details and good composition as well. An uncommon duck on TN. TFS. : )

Hi Gerhard, wonderful lighting. I loved the soft light covers the whole frame. The background including the trunk she perched makes a nice contrast with the duck in this great composition.
Very well done.

Hi Gerhard.
Nicely composed, with good detail which stands out well against the background.

Gerhard, a beautiful shot. The pose is great, as well as composition.

The shot has slightly dark shades, probably due to the overcast conditions you mentioned. Even though, I like these shades.

Very good capture Gerhard and for a duck picture refreshinly different. Very good job.

Great composition as usual, overcast conditions have enhanced the subtle tones. I especially like the texture on the webbing. Good one.

Gerhard, this is new to me. I love his blue beak and long legs and feet. Good shot, well composed with good details and colours. Thank you.

Hi Gerhard. This is a great shot, studio quality. It is soft but so detailed...and the BG is perfect. I like it very much.

This duck looks so sweet, I love the soft brown feathers and blurry background, the rough tree branch or log he's standing on is very complimentary, well done.
