[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For some reason this bluebottle just landed on my thumb while I was shooting a moth. And he just sat there and waited for me to take the photo. Got about three shots off before he flew away.

If you are wondering what the brown mark on my thumbnail is. We had a local election a few weeks ago. The mark is a result of an iodine drop that they place on the cuticle of the nail. You can actually see how much may nail has grown since then.

Calliphoridae (blowflies)

Bluebottle Fly

Life-cycle
Blue Bottle flies are larger than the common house fly and they have a shiny blue body dusted with white on the abdomen. They are also know as blowflies because they 'blow' their eggs onto exposed meat.

Creamy white eggs are laid on the flesh of dead animals and can hatch between 18-48 hours. The small larvae known as maggots feed on the flesh of the animal. The pupal stage lasts from 9-12 days, the pupa are a cylindrical in shape and dull red-brown.

The normal habitat of Blue Bottle flies is outside. Females may enter houses in search of food unlike the common house fly they may frequent cool dark places such as larders and can be distinguished by their loud buzzing noise.

Hi Jannie,

Another nice macro. Things like this never happen to me, they always fly off as I am about to take the shot. Amazing detail and colour. TFS.

Hi Jannie!
Very nice meeting :-) Fly is big and detailed, I like its pose and colours. Great, shinny surfaces reflecting your thumb and all world around.

Hello Jannie
Luckily you don't bite your nails... Do you want to tell me that you took this photo while holding the camera with one hand or were the camera already on the tripod?
Excellent capture of Thumbelina in a very interesting composition. Lovely colours, great DOF with superb details, and the exposure was spot-on.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Jannie,
I've seen a couple of shots on TN where the camera is held one-handed, I'm impressed that you managed to get the shot without moving your hand and the Bluebottle flying away. Excellent detail and exposure, colours are spot-on.
Cheers,
Adrian
