Cape Weaver
Ploceus capensis

Also know as: AFR: Kaapse Wewer, GER: Kapweber, FRE: Tisserin du Cap.

capense/capensis: Is modern Latin for, of the Cape. ploceus: Is derived from the Greek word “plok” meaning a web or anything woven (plokos means a braid or wreath).

It is a medium sized bird with a relatively long bill. The breeding male’s head is brownish orange, shading to yellow underparts and yellowish green upperparts. It has a harsh penetrating swizzling it and sings all year round.

The Cape weaver is as far as I could ascertain only found in South Africa. They can be found on the Western, Southern and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho and most of the “old” Transvaal. They are common residents, usually found in open woodland, wooded rivers, streams and kloofs, reedbeds near trees, farmland, parks, and gardens.

They forage on ground and in trees, gleaning from bark and foliage and probing flowers. (forehead often coloured orange or yellow by pollen) They chase other birds at food sourceand flicks their wings vigorously when alarmed. They enjoy insects, seeds, flower parts and nectar. (especially of Aloe and Erythrina)

I found it very interesting that the head of the bird got coloured from the pollen and that the bird and the Aloe flower looked so similar.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Callie on his birthday the 21st of July. Yes… just a day before TN’s birthday. He took me to the Walter Sisulu Botanical gardens to see all the Aloe’s blooming. It was quite a sight. Most of the succulents are in bloom in our very dry winter, truly a special treat. If it wasn’t for Adam and Robert who initiated this site I would never have met Callie. I would still be struggling to find out what “MACRO” means and I would have missed interacting with all of you! I enjoy this haven on the net and have learned a lot in a very short time from all of you. Thank you.

”Happy Birthday!”

Thank you Adam and Robert for the time and effort you put in to make this special for all of us. I appreciate it.

I like everything about this picture. Well done, Gerhard. The deep rich color and the way the background echos the colors of the subject makes it perfect.

The colours of this photo stood out in the thumbnail Gerhard, but here they are even more unique. The bird and the flower are coloured so similar and they all tone in so well against the golden BG. Good timing! Perfect shot. Well done!!

Hello Gerhard

This is some shot! Love the colours and the mottled OOF BG. Lighting is perfect. Tack sharp with awesome details. Timing was sopt on! Congrats on this senational work. Thank you for your contibution to this site. The professionalism and quality of your work is my aspiration.

Great shot Gerhardt, especially the harmony of colors between the background, the bird and the flower. The only thing that's not in harmony, although in perfect focus is what the bird was doing when the shutter clicked.

As always, you show beautiful work my friend.

As always the light in this picture is great Gerhard. Details are sharp and composition is very strong. I don't know if a shitting bird is a good thing in SA, but where I come from it brings good luck when a bird shits on you. ;) Well done & TFS!

Hi Gerhard,
what a picture, what a bird. Perfect Photo. Wonderful warm colours. Exellent job.

heeey Gerhard, fantastic shot! by the way I too was there at the botanical garden the same day after 4.00 pm trying to capture the black eagle.

Oops, he littered ;-)
Nice and sharp capture with excellent colours, POV and DOF + an unobtrusive bg to set him off nicely.

Brilliant capture Gerhard, love the warm colours and impressive details. The wee is a bonus. Composition is perfect as is frame. Very fine work.

Dankie Gerhard, I just got started on Trek Nature and pleased to see work like yours. Hope you dont take offence if I say its a "kak shot", if you know what I mean. Interesting how you managed to take out the background while still ensuring the sharp focus on the entire subject with f/8.

I especially like the look on his face :) - This one (in a different context) potrayes what we think of the other Robert - the Mugabe chap.

This is absolutely stunning and is testiment to the skill you have developed over the last year. Trust me, this image will be going places.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Hey man, this is incredible. Great action shot.:)) Wonderful colours, details and DOF.
Excellent composition.
Very well done Gerhard.
Great shot.

It was a great afternoon, and I love the action here. All the nice things have been said, so :
In line with your recent forum post - I think you need a bit more light on the face, especially the bill and a bit on the tummy and the tail. I am guilty too of not using flash, but this would improve the wow factor here. Also maybe rotate 180º?

What a stunning photo, Gerhard!
Your timing is perfect as well, although I can't imagine that you knew it would be...;-)
An excellent composition, congratulations, and thank you for inspiring us.

Hi Gerhard!
Personal assessment of the photo: excellent.
Very strong visual impact.
A difficult shot, IMHO.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete and very interesting. So I miss Callie's birthday. Appropriated dedication.

I love how the colors of the bird match the plant perfectly. So this is what a urinating bird looks like, LOL! Wonderful light and DOF, TFS!

You certainly captured the moment here!
When I noticed, it brought a little chuckle out.

The bird and the flower do indeed have a remarkable resemblance.
Beautiful picture! Excellent job!

Maginifique! La composition, les couleurs, la définition, le timing... La fleur même ressemble à un peu à un oiseau. Bravo!
