Breeding
Steenbok are typically solitary, except for when a pair come together to mate. However, it has been suggested that pairs occupy consistent territories while living independently, staying in contact through scent markings, so that they know where their mate is most of the time. Scent marking is primarily through dung middens. Territories range from 4 hectares to one square kilometre. The male is aggressive during the female's oestrus, engaging in "bluff-and-bluster" type displays with rival males—prolonged contests invariably involve well-matched individuals, usually in their prime.
Breeding occurs throughout the year, although more fawns are born November to December in the southern spring–summer; some females may breed twice a year. Gestation period is about 170 days, and usually a single precocious fawn is produced. The fawn is kept hidden in vegetation for 2 weeks, but they suckle for 3 months. Females become sexually mature at 6–8 months and males at 9 months.
Steenbok are known to live for 7 years or more.

Hi Annick,

Oh look at this little darling. Such a tiny and dainty little thing. Excellent colour, composition and DOF. Well captured Annick.

This is precious Annick. He/she looks so small and vulnerable within the larger landscape. I love the wonderful soft texture and colors of the background with the tiny steenbok so amazingly sharp in front. beautiful work.

Hi Annick

Great shot of this lovely antelope. I think the way you have surrounded it with green is very, very effective.

Hi Annick,

What amaze my, beside the quality of your pictures, is haw many species of animals and birds you photographed in the wild, in a relative short trip. About this cute antelope I just find out from your posting that it exist – hard to comment. It embarrass me a bit when I post pictures of little birds from the Park across the street of my house.

Thanks, Mario

Hallo Annick,
Peter

Hi Anncik

What a cure fellow here! What happened to it? He looks a bit lost... :(
An exceptional close-up again from you, my friend!
I love the shallow DOF here that isolates the little Steenbok so well here! Also, the composition - with plenty of room in the direction it is looking in - is gorgeous and also maintains the delicate feeling of the scene (not having any other big or distracting elements in it).
Other than that, the standard for you: impeccable sharpness and spot-on exposure! ;)

BRAVO and TFS

Hi Annick,
very poetic, the image of this shy Steenbok and the subdued colors. The picture has a high artistic value.

Hello Annick,

Your photo has a very fine composition showing the steenbok in great sharpness anainst the blurry background. There are very fine and deklicate color tones in your photo and a pleasent contrast between animal's fur color and the background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Annick,
this is a wonderful photo.
The wide crop has made this cute little Steenbok look so vulnerable and small :-)
Very sharp and crisp.
Excellent light.

Well done,
Joe

Bonjour Annick,
Quelle belle image! La petite antilope est plus qu'adorable et nous paraît encore bien fragile. Tu as très bien constuit ton image en décentrant le sujet principal et en nous montrant son environnement. Image très douce.
Un grand merci
Anne
