Woodland Kingfisher / Halcyon senegalensis

The Woodland Kingfisher is number 52 in the series of the Birds of the Kruger which I am still sharing although I paused for a while. With time I still aim to share a total of at least 100 of the birds from this wonderful game reserve. I would have loved to share them all, but there are still 100's which I was not able to photograph as yet.

This image was taken during a short 5 day visit to the park at the end of March. The Woodland Kingfisher is one of the birds I had on my wish list and was very thrilled when we were able to get some good photographs of while it was sitting in a tree, posing so beautifully and with poise.

The blue colouration of kingfishers is not a blue pigment, but a structural effect known as Tyndall scattering, in which fine airspaces in the feather material scatter short wavelengths of light, giving rise to the intense blue effect. If you were to look at a kingfisher feather with the light shining through it, instead of reflected off it, it would be brown. The brown pigment, called melanin, absorbs all other wavelengths of light to intensify the blueness.

The Woodland Kingfisher is the most radiant blue of any woodland bird and its "krit-trrrrrr" call is as cheerful as the colour of its blue back. It comes to southern Africa to breed from October to April, departing after that for more tropical latitudes. Because these birds migrate mainly by night, they sometimes collide with unexpected obstacles or lighted windows, killing or injuring themselves.

These kingfishers feed mainly on insects and reptiles; they seldom occur near water and rarely dive for fish.

Members of a pair display by gyrating from side to side and flashing their blue-black wings as they sing their inimitable song. The nest is either a natural hole in a tree or one excavated by a woodpecker or barbet. They may even build their nests under the eaves of houses. The female lays her 3 glossy white eggs, which hatch out in 13-14 days. Both parents feed the nestlings for 2-3 weeks.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Wow that's an awesome shot, with good sharpness and oh so lovely a colorful subject

Hello Anna,
Not only is the bird very beautiful and rendered in excellent quality, but so is the foliage, standing out against the OOF background. A real pleasure to view. Is there a possibility that we can see a collection of your birds of Kruger on-line? Best wishes.

Ciao Anna, great capture of lovely kingfisher with fanmtastic colors, splendid sharpness and fine details, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Anna,

Really good close up of the Kingfisher resting on the acacia tree, I remember inspecting the long, hard and sharp thorns of this tree when I was in Tanzania. It is amazing how nature is protecting itself. Without the thorn the giraffes would have to have such long tongue or it might just wipe out the tree within days. Well back to this bird, it is beautiful, love the light blue of the plumage, the red beak really stand out against the green, like a stem of red hot pepper.

Beautiful shot with good composition and excellent details.

Hi Anna,

A real nice bird proficiently captured. Light, colour is perfect. Sharpness is quite good - the best one can get at extremal ranges of the instrument used. Interesting note about the species.

Hi, Anna
This is just an excellent portrait of the kingfisher hunting from the acacia. Everything is as it should be, and the exposure and colours look excellent to me. You had a little luck, as there are no twigs or thorns between your lens and the bird, which is so often a problem. A fine posting.
Best wishes, Nigel.

Bonjour Anna,

Hello Anna,
What a beauty you have posted this time. Very interesting to know that it's feathers are actually a brown color. I also am surprised to find that this particular kingfisher doesn't spend much time around water like it's many cousins do.
Love the gorgeous bluish turquoise colors and sharp focus. Must say the red bill is a real eye catcher which is hard to ignore. Great job at showing off this little fellow.
