Leopard - Panthera pardus, - shoulder height 75 cm; up to 80 kg M, 40 kg F. Its ground colour is off-white to golden, with black spots on the legs, shoulders, head & hindquarters. The back & sides have irregular, light centred rosettes scattered profusely over them. As some already know, this is THE CAT in my book. This is also a reworked Provia 100? slide of a previous TE post. I added some space around the top & front, which I did not know how to do last year. This is one of my favourite pictures of this elusive feline, showing-off its strength & beauty. Scanned on flatbed, enlarged as stated, cloned in brown GB to missing areas, little USM and soft light in fade USM, reduced to site size. Now, I can wax lyrical over leopards, but for first, the where and how of this shot - Sabi Sands is one of the private game reserves in SA that is world renowned for seeing the Big Five. Next door to it is Sabi Sabi, the best private game reserve in the world. The big cats, though wild, are so used you people, that you can approach them to within 1m! Actually, they approach you sometimes! This is a young male we encountered early one morning in May 2002. Nikon F90X, Sigma 50-500 lens @ 500 mm, programme mode. Shot from back of open game vehicle, resting lens on my wife’s shoulder and my elbow on the backrest of the seat. Enjoy the magic, it is thrilling! & within 10 m! Ingwe is Zulu for leopard. I kept it a bit dark, so feel free to WS! All comments welcomed and appreciated.

I'm glad your wife was so stable in order for you to take this shot and like the way that the background is out of focus - this bring the attention to the subject. Also - I see what you mean by giving the animal breathing space. Vey well taken

Beautiful job Callie! The technique you describe of using your wife's shoulder to add stability to your lens is one I have used at the availabilty of a buddy and it works wonders!

This is a lovely animal and you have presented him so beautifully! Thanks, Callie!

Callie, this is a very lovely Leopard, the colours and the compostion are lovely. Great job!

A lovely portrait. I got some leopards at a breading program area and it was hard to get, I imagine that it's more difficult in a big reserve

Just outstanding, Callie. The beautiful posing, the alert look, the gorgeous pattern - amazing. I don't know what more to say, so I'll just add it as a favorite and look forward to your next posting :-)

Yup, much better than the dark version posted yesterday ;-))

Masterfull, Callie. I understand the critique you gave on my mugshot of the lion so much better when looking at this masterpiece. 10/10 Very nice note, did not know about "Ingwe" nice touch. Thanx for sharing

Hola Callie: This is super a portrait of a leopard, this animal possesses a great beauty, I travel each point of his skin and I meet with an extraordinary beauty, I like the clarity of its eyes, and the gilded border orange captured around its pupils. Callie: What thing is the black object that shines in the inferior part next to him??? I can imagine that it is a rock but their squared small forms, to create a doubt in my. Very well for the note, and for the picture that I will keep in my favorite ones. *Ninfa Urania*

Hi Callie, I'm back. I never get tired of your leopard photos. This is one of your best (and perhaps some improvement due to better PS technique too, you know what I mean :-)). Great composition, and I like the fact that it is slightly darker. Very well done!

very impressive picture here Callie, colors, expression and compo simply superb !!

This one fir sure would be great on a wall in a large size. Perfect handling of the light, colours are great as well as the composition and on top of that you even made him/her pose in a very nice way - can one wish more than that;-).

Ok Callie how long did you have to get him to sit for you to be able to paint this majestic portrate, the slight adjustment of the space around him makes a lot of difference to the feel of it.
It might of been nice to have a link to the TE vertion so people can compair the 2 images as this is in reality a repost, admitedly one the IMO works superbly,Respect.

Of all the good things I can say (and which I've already been accustomed from your part on Te, for instance)I specially like the brighter place in the backgound you've located its head.

The gorgeous warm background patch makes it it looks like a studio shot of your leopard, jsut like you had taken it to "studio Harcourt - Paris" (the photolab who takes some of the most famous movie star portraits).

I have a certain respect for leopards : 40 years ago while guiding a safari, my father used to work in Tanzania and was attacked and jumped on by a leopard which was obviously not as tame as sabi sabi's...
It was him or it : fortunately -for me- my father was quicker and killed the leopard, with another issue, I wouldn't be here writing any comments on TrekNature ;-D...

The light and composition in your shot ! Incredible, beautiful, Callie.
I think you're doing well here, with your animal-shots !

Callie, all your photos are great. Most of the time I got the impression to look at Discovery Channel.
You have a very good eye and a very good camera too. But you manipulate it whit a pro
On this leopard, the colors are so rich and the eye of this felin is more real than real.
Great, great job. ******
