Larus dominicanus

The Kelp Gull breeds on coasts and islands through much of the southern hemisphere. The race L. d. vetula occurs around southern Africa, and the nominate L. d. dominicanus is the subspecies found around South America and parts of Australia, where it overlaps with Pacific Gull.

It is the southern equivalent of the northern hemisphere's Lesser Black-backed Gull and is similar in size to that species at 56cm with an 128cm wingspan.

This is a mainly coastal gull. The nest is a shallow depression on the ground lined with vegetation and feathers. The female usually lays 2 or 3 eggs. Both parents feed the young birds.

Adults have black upperparts and wings. The head, underparts, tail and the small "mirrors" at the wing tips are white. The bill is yellow with a red spot, and the legs are greenish. The call is a strident ki-och.

Young birds have scaly black-brown upperparts, and a neat wing pattern. They take four years to reach maturity.

These are omnivores like most Larus gulls, and they will scavenge as well as seeking suitable small prey.

Nice moment frozen!
Good colors and sharpness.
Andrea

Great capture, with good colors and excellent composition. The white water against the blue sky is fantastic. The seagull seems to be posing for you on this rock :-) Well done !
Valérie.

Hi Jannie,
Great shot! Sorry, no time for comments, but well deserved :)
Howard

This is a very good shot for a compact camera. Exposure is perfect with the whites only minutely overexposed. The wave splash and POV is really good. A well composed image and capture very well.

Hello Jannie,

Very nice picture of that gull!!! I like the way the water surrounds the bird!!! So, the bg cannot be more perfect! Very good pov also! Details and shaprness are very good also!
TFS,

Michel

I like this composition very much Jannie.
You have capture a wave braking moment that also includes the seagull with such a detail that this picture is one of the kind.
Great composition, colors and details.
Congratulations and Regards
JC

Great composition Jannie, I like it a lot. The water in the background and the pose of the gull are key factors. Great work, thanks.

Hi Jannie,
Looks like a neat way of taking a shower :-) Lovely shot, excellent detail and perfect exposure with all those bright whites. Also a kind of 'transient' composition as the water in front of the Gull is perfectly on the third. Never seen that before! Informative note too, great work.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Jannie,
A great picture. Excellent composition. Very excite to see very compose kelp gull against roaring water in the background.
JC

Hi Jannie, this is a wonderfully evocative shot, almost like an advert for a cologne spray ;). All that spray and the clear colours: I can almost smell the sea right here. Your choice of speed and exposure are great as is your composition. It's a lovely shot :)

Hi Jannie,
This is very cool with the sea spray for a back drop. Strong composition and light. Colors and detail look superb. EXCELLENT!

Die "overall" effek is baie goed. Ek hou van die kompo en sal miskien 1cm afsny onder. Pasop vir "oversharpening" Ek kan die "halo's sien onder die bek ek op die nek.bors.
