Vespidae - Paper Wasp

Paper wasps gather fibres from old wood and dead dry plant stems, chew them and mix with saliva to make a water-resistant gray paper. The nests are characterised by having open cells and a petiole attaching the nest to the substrate. The wasps produce a chemical which repels ants and secretes it around the base of this petiole in order to avoid letting their brood become ant food.

Despite the use of the proper name, most social wasps make nests from paper, although some tropical wasp species such as Listenogaster flavolineata use mud, a far more easy resource for the wasp to collect. The larger colonial species, Yellowjackets, Hornets, can be very defensive and should not be approached unless one is experienced. All are beneficial and should be protected if possible. In Europe, hornets are a threatened species and are protected by law.

Found this little guy on the leaf of a Hottentot Fig.

Hello Jannie
I have tried some of these without success thus far. Firstly I am rather cat-foot for them and secondly they are far too fast for me. I suppose my fears are born out of a childhood experience with a number of its relatives. I was attacked by a whole squadron of these admonishers of pain and the result was definitely not in my favour.
The composition is great with the single blade coming in at the diagonal. Excellent colours and very good DOF provided lovely details. The BG is well OOF and removed thus enhancing the wasp and the Hottentot fig leaf. The lighting/exposure was very well handled.
Good work and TFS.

Privet Jannie.
As that he suspiciously looks at the photographer. Green diagonal of road and the lonely red traveller. Interesting work.
