[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well if I have ever seen human-like behaviour, this is it. This youngster is around 12 weeks old and reminded me of that naughty little kid in the restaurant, pulling faces and sticking his tongue out to all the strangers.

It was completely pre-occupied with its lips and tongue and it seemed to stick it tongue out to everyone, as well as pulling some strange faces.

This was taken in extremely windy conditions and this can be seen in the tufts of hair on his “horns” being blown in different directions in the two shots. The shooting location was the Kragga Kamma Game Park outside Port Elizabeth

More about the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis).

In appearance, giraffe are probably one of the most unusual of all Africa’s mammals. Their excessively long legs and neck allow them to feed on leaves and seed-pods of trees at a level where they have no competitors amongst the other major herbivores.

Their patchwork body-patterns vary slightly though individual colour differences may sometimes be very obvious, some having unusually dark body patches whilst others are very light. The differences do not indicate different species, but merely represent the normal variation found in every animal species.

Giraffe are susceptible to attack by lion, and many are killed each year. The great cats jump onto the back of a fleeing giraffe, grab a firm hold and bite into the neck. These giants, however, are not an easy prey as a kick from a distraught giraffe can kill or severely injure any careless predator.

I really like giraffes. What makes them so special to me, is that you don't always get an ass shot when you photograph them like with most antelopes.
This is a good presentation with excellence written all over it.
'Good work Japie

Well done, Japie! The colors are fantastic as well as the lighting. I wonder, however , if the behavior of this youngster is something more akin to mild stress. Some animals exhibit certain signs of stress like yawning as dogs do. Or perhaps Giraffes use their tongues to taste scents on the air...just wild guess on my part, though. Your note was very fun!

The Windy City... The horns shows clearly that this city is aptly named. Well done on a fun and intersting post. Technically perfect, Japie.

Fun pair of photos, best seen together, I feel. The expressions, framed nicely by your good cropping, make them appear almost human!
