[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The 21st in the series under the title FROM ICE TO FIRE - A 200 MILLION YEAR JOURNEY BETWEEN TWO DESERTS. To follow the whole story, one would have to start with Image 1.

It still is the year 183 million before present and the supercontinent Gondwana is beginning to crack apart. Magma wells up from below along fissures and some of it solidifies on its upward journey to form near-vertical dykes of dolerite like the one shown in No 20 of the series. At the same time some magma intrudes laterally inbetween the layers of sedimentary strata to form sills of dolerite varying in thickness from a few to hundreds of metres.

The thick sill seen here forming the top of the mountains intruded several kilometres below the surface and is now exposed at the present-day surface after many millions of years of erosion. Being relatively more resistant to weathering than the sedimentary strata, the dolerite sills, where exposed at the surface, form the higher topographic features.

The snow that occurred here a few weeks ago has nothing to do with the title of the series as the current climate is very different from what prevailed then. And while the topography is very much influenced by the underlying geology, it also is very different from, and much lower than, the land surface of the early Jurassic Period.

Hello Neels,
Beautiful landscape image which reminds me somewhat of the terrain surrounding the Grand Canyon area in our western states. Nicely composed shot showing the exposed layers of rock on the right as well as the eroded mountains in the BG. The snow is a real bonus to an already attractive scene.

Neels, believe me, but I never imagined it snows in SA! What a pleasant surprise!!
Seen in relation with earth's history, this beautiful landscape turns much more interesting for me.

Beautiful panoramic view on these SA mountains, even covered with snow!
Interesting for me to see the flat tops of these rocks, looks so much different from ours.

A lovely shot - strange for me to see snow in SA (though the first time I arrived the area round Johannesburg was white with frost).

Nice use of the frame and contrasting forms and colours.
