[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The 22nd and penultimate in the series under the title FROM ICE TO FIRE - A 200 MILLION YEAR JOURNEY BETWEEN TWO DESERTS. To follow the whole story, one would have to start with Image 1.

Basaltic magma forms sills below the surface and rushes up along fissures to flow out onto the desert landscape. Sand is still being moved around and aeolian* and associated deposits - lower part - intercalate with the first lava flows - upper part of the picture. Soon now the whole of Southern Africa will be dominated by volcanoes that turn the environment even more hostile, rendering it largely uninhabitable to organic life.

*Aeolus, in Greek mythology, is the god of the winds, hence the adjective for wind-deposited sediments.

Hello Neels,
The colors in this particular layered strata rock looks very similar to some areas of Ohio. As I travel the interstate highways I am always looking for these unique features which are quite interesting and beautiful. Nicely photographed while showing wonderful detail.
