[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have been threatening for a long time to post this picture of the Grey crowned Crane – Balearica regulorum – 105 – 112 cm. This is a very beautiful bird, and a couple of versions have already been posted on TN, since it is a favourite Zoo bird and very striking. This pose is not so easy to get, as the crane ruffles it feathers and shake the head at the same time, resulting in this polo-neck sweater. There is no warning either that he will do it, it just happens. This is also one of the few bird species with blue eyes. There are only 15 crane species worldwide, 6 off calling Africa home. We have 3 species, one being endemic, our National bird, the Blue Crane. Cranes are long-legged, very large birds with relatively short bills. They favour wetlands, one of the reasons some are on the endangered list. Their courtship displays involve elaborate dances.
Picture taken in Krugersdorp Private Game Reserve; ISO 200; Nikon D70; Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens and 2X converter @ 380 mm; 1/200 @ F8; Aperture Mode; iTTL balanced off camera flash; Pattern Metering Mode; Manfrotto Tripod and Wimberley head; no cropping, added space to right; bit of USM and Hue & saturation brightness; reduced to Site size. One of the first photographs I got with the D70 last year around May.
For Luc and Pieter – I do not always post the mug shots looking left, sometimes the compo ask for looking right

Callie, I love this bird. When I first saw this one posted last year I thought it wasn't real. Amazing colours and especially the blue eyes. And I like how you managed to show the polo-neck - all ready for our winter! Good compo and very well done. TFS.

Hi Callie, wow, look at those eyes! Great shot. The colours and compo are magnificent...now if that bird was facing to the left...:-) just kidding.

Excellent job.

Ha Callie,

Mooie foto. Het lijkt wel alsof de vogel zo uit de verfwinkel komt, bijna onnatuurlijk zo'n kleurencombinatie.

Well done! So much detail. Great colors, and good composition. TFS.

This is an amazing bird...a bird wearing a "sun" cap with a red scarf... on top of his blue eyes...
and the shot really makes it look more amazing with this blurred background. Perfect colors and details.

I see that you wrote that you added space on the right side... Now that you say it I notice the mark especially at the top but really isn't so visible. We MUST find something wrong in your pics once in a while... just to reassure us that you are human just like us amateurs.

Laughed out loud at this one Callie. He looks like a few people I have to deal with on a regular basis. But anyway it is a wonderful photo and your work is breathtaking.

An Aristo...Bird.
I can say nothing of glittering here, Callie.
I have fliped horizontaly the picture and you are right. It is better like this. Space to right is better. Aesthetically, I do not know why, but subjectively I see that it is so better. Maybe you can emit some words above, if you have the time of it? I wonder where and when you learnt all these important notions concerning the photography. Maybe it is something innate or of notions acquired by the experience, but all that I see they are the results. Not so bad results ;-)
Thanks my young friend ;-) but maybe you navigate within an older soul than me.

De kop van een Kraanvogel, prachtige vogel maar kan agresief zijn ik heb het zelf ondervonden tijdens een foto opnamen. Prachtige foto Callie en perfect van kleur, Mooi!

Looks like Parisian from Mon Mart [or something, my wife knows French, not me :-)]. Great picture Callie! Superb colours, light, pose and subject!

Very nice portrait Callie. The details are razorsharp (I especially like the details on the red piece of skin). The colors are superb and the uncentered position is perfect. Blurred BG is very nice aswell. I always call this bird a 'clown', not because of it's behaviour but rather because of his painted face. :)

What a bird and what a capture. Great composition with great colors.
Very well done.

Perfect pose, perfect colours, excellent sharpness, perfect dof all in a perfect composition/cropping - what more can you ask.

This is a very pleasant picture to look at Callie.

What a bird and what a capture. Great composition with great colors & sharpness,
You did a great work Callie !

You brought a very nice model today and the bird knows exactly how to pose for TN !
Very nice pic, Callie !

Callie, would you believe I saw this beautiful crane moving it's head on my screen!
This is to me one of the best examples of how light mastering can give life to a subject, specially when color contrasts are high. It is simply amazing. No nits, of course, and a favorite. BTW, the title fits very well... an idea of purchase for next summer.

Such a nice pose. I love them. I have nothing as nice as this one. Well done Callie.

Superb shot. You were so lucky to see this beautiful bird. Perfect focus and detail. Thanks so much for sharing. Congratulations

Wonderful close up of this crane. The details and colors are stunning. I especially like the sun shining on his crown. You captured this beautiful bird from a most unique POV. Thank you, Callie!

Irresistable photo, Callie. Composition is so effective, and you really capture the grandeur of this animal!

To deepen the tones, try applying an unsharp mask with a very large pixel radius (maybe about 150 or even higher), and a low percentage. This will help to eliminate any sense of haze that is present. See the workshop.
