Grey Hornbill Tocus nasutus 46 cm this is the female of the species, for a change the more colourful one of the two, as least as far as her bill goes. The male has a distinctive cask on the upper mandible. The smaller hornbills, like the 2 I have already posted & this, guy, are generally birds of the savannah, rather than the forests. They are divided into 2 groups, those that have whistling calls & are mainly tree feeders, & the ground feeders that have chuckling calls. The Grey Hornbill belongs to the first group and is the most widely distributed hornbill of the 3. It is a brownish grey bird; the bill is black in the make, & red in the female. Both sexes have a yellow patch on the upper mandible, & diagonal lines on the lower one. It is also less sociable than other hornbills, keeping generally in pairs or singly. They advertise their presence by perching in the top of trees, pointing the bill skywards and uttering a mournful, whistling cry. Tomorrow, the whole bird. Taken @Krugersdorp Game Reserve on 23rd July @ 16h10; ISO 200 @ -1,3 EV; Nikon D70; Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens & 2X converter @ Focal length 600 mm; 1/250 @ F8; Aperture Priority Mode; no flash, Pattern Metering Mode; Manfrotto Tripod and Wimberley head; cropping all round; little USM & some Hue & saturation brightness; reduced to Site size. Bird is sitting on a stump.

Haughty-looking madam, despite the fact that her lipstick slipped ;-) Nice portrait with good sharpness and DOF and a complementary background to set her off.

Hery is Callie with his hornbill,
Very good composition againe, great colours, great dof very ood note, erg goed gedaan, with my compliments.

These get better and better. The lighting on the bird and the dark background really set off the birds colours and make this photo into something special.

Callie, Great Hornbill shot. I love the composition and colours. The bright red beak flowing over into the dark brown background is very nice. Detailson the head are very good. It's nice to see that Hornbills can have so very different expressions. This one seems to be looking proud an dalert.
Great portrait.
Greetings, Jan

Superbe photo de ce volatile au bec cornu.
Bravo Callie, cette photo est magnifique.

Good DOF and nice tight crop... good use of your 600mms! The low light gives a sort of glassy/watery look to her eye.

Stunning image! Lighting, colors...all just beautiful.

Fun title, Callie ;-) As always, outstanding detail and definition on the bird's anatomical features, and nice handling of the DOF - in this case the bird's head perfectly fits into the brighter part of the background. Accompanied by the usual impeccable notes, very nice.

La combinacion de los tonos del ave con el fondo es fantastico... sobre todo por la profundidad lograda.
Hermoso primer plano, excelente definicion, foco y encuadre.
Las notas... completisimas, como siempre.

The combination of the tones of the bird with the bottom is fantastic... mainly by the obtained depth.
Beautiful first plane, excellent definition, focus and frame.
The notes... very complete, like always.

But,wonderful, wonderful details,Really I have not seen before,Amazing, callie,Thanks alot for posting & showing us,Great work you did,an admirable shot in birds categories,You did excellent.

With that look I am very happy that it is not my wife or my mother in law ;-).

Excellent capture Callie. Wonderful colours and the light is just where it should be - the curved dark background in front of the bird makes it look like she was on a stage illuminated by the stage light. Composition is perfect.

This one is very good Callie, as per most of your shots. I think what really sets this one apart is the background, it couldn't be better if it was shot in a studio.
