Daddy long legs
Pholcidae family

The Pholcidae, or daddy long legs spiders, is a large family with a worldwide distribution. In South Africa there are 3 genera with about 39 species; Pholcus, Smeringopus and Spermaphora.

Pholcids are fragile spiders, the body being 2 to 10 mm in length and the legs are up to 30 mm long. Pholcus and Smeringopus have cylindrical abdomens and the eyes are arranged in 2 lateral groups of 3 and 2 smaller median contiguous (together) eyes. Spermaphora has a small globose (round) abdomen and its eyes are arranged in 2 groups of 3 and no median eyes. Pholcids are grey to brown with banding or chevron markings.

I know the BG is not natural, but one seldom gets these critters outside the house. It is the first one I found that has caught another spider. It difficult to tell which species it is but looks like a salty. Hope you like it.

I know these spiders very well. I seem to have a few families trying to take up residence at home!
This is good Luc, I've never seen them catch anything like this before. Nice and sharp too. Very well captured.

Great macro shot Gerhard, the sharp details of the spider is wonderful, you can clearly see the hair on its legs! (brrr) Well captured, not an everyday scence when one spider captured another one. Well done, thanks for sharing.. :)

Gerhard, to me, the bg is not a problem.

A great moment, a great picture.

Excellent pov and sharpness.

This is awesome, Gerhard! Two for the price of one. Well done on the detail including the webbing. I am not much for spiders, however this one was great to see. (Not so scary as some). TFS.

Thanks, Gerhard. Sorry, I am too tired to write a good comment, I am in automatic mode.

Very good macro , Gerhard.
You don't need a macro when you can handle the tubes this way.
Good composition, colours and details.
Well done, my friend.

I hope you get a long cold winter with a lots of snow. ;-)

Hello Gerhard!
What a clear and detailed picture you offer to us. I know this are difficult to get, but your f:32 almost nailed it this time, only one leg touching the frame is criticable. The rest is a pleasure to look at. The extension tube works very nice indeed. Regards, Felipe.
