Image taken at day2 (2/20).

Spending the first night in Berg-en-Dal. Two surprises for a 'unseasoned' Belgian: dark at six and the rumbling elements above me at night as if the Gods were mad I had arrived in Kruger. I convinced them my soul wasn't so bad after all.
So in the morning I left Berg-en-Dal heading north towards Skukuza Restcamp. It was a warm day. On my way I stopped at Afsaal, one of the few 'picnic' places where you can alighten your car in Kruger. That's the place where I took this image. Thus with a monopod.
This Hornbill is a common bird in Kruger, I think. However I just found out there are similar species Hornbills of that size in Kruger.
Afsaal is situated in Southwestern Kruger. In a small stroke of open savanna; grassland on basalt.

wiki:
The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Tockus leucomelas, is an African Hornbill. It is a medium sized bird, with length between 48 to 60 cm, characterized by a long yellow beak with a casque (only in males). The skin around the eyes and in the malar stripe is vivid red-coloured.

They present white belly, grey neck, and black back with abundant white spots and stripes. They feed mainly on the ground surface, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions. Termites and ants are a preferred food source in the dry season.

Females lay 3 to 4 white eggs in their nest cavities and incubate them for about 25 days. Juveniles take about 45 days to mature. This hornbill is a common, widespread resident of the dry thorn fields and broad-leafed woodlands of inland southern to northeastern Africa. Frequently they can be sighted along roads.

Another superb shot Annick, pretty much perfect from what i can gather! The exposure in the white feathers is very well done indeed and the side profile is excellent. Great detail captured and perfect DOF. Not sure i'd want to get on the wrong side of that impressive looking beak!

Hi Annick

It's getting better and better :)
I really love this picture of such an impressive bird as the hornbill.
Monopod or not, this is an impeccably sharp shot, with a simply perfect DOF - one that focuses stricly on the subject while creating a lovely bokeh in the BG.
Superb composition and spot-on exposure that came with some brilliant colors, too.
Great work!
