Another year has fleet-footedly passed me by. A year that had so many "ups" and "downs", but fortunately for the downs because it makes the ups appear so much better. Of course one of the major ups was the pleasure that I could spend the year here on this site and that brought me to this day, "My 2nd Anniversary on TrekNature".

I don't want to waste my time pondering the downs, but I cannot ignore the fact that I had a pretty serious scare, mid January 2007, after my heart tried to attack me. That meant a serious look at life and the way I continue further on my earthly journey. A while in hospital and a battery of tests resulted in a hand full of pills that need to be taken daily, but hey, I can still hold a camera and press the shutter release button, "so who's crying?"

The ups however are by far the topic that gets my crocked heart pounding custard. What better way than to spend a year with friends whom I've grown to love, respect, and admire via this cyber medium which we daily visit and use to enter each others houses and hearts. Somebody posted a thread in the forum about the bickering (shenanigans) and strife that occurs on one of our sister sites, but here, on the friendly site, there's mostly peace and people rather help and support each other. I just loved the reply given by one of our fellow members, "I guess Nature lovers are gentler souls. The environment here is much more conducive to learning and sharing". Wow, a spot on and powerful summary of this site and its wonderful people. You people certainly enriched my life since I joined TrekNature on 23 January 2006. Kudos to you all.

This photo highlights the beginning of yet another perfect day and was taken at 05h38 AM (8 minutes after the gates opened) on the H11 link road between Skukuza and the Sabie River loop road. It was the moment of day when the sand of time had just begun to trickle through the hourglass and we faced the wonderful possibility of yet another spectacular Bushveld sunrise. Due to the cloudy conditions it was a rather darkish morning. The sun tried its best to shine some light through a misty cloud and was hovering just below a much darker bank of clouds. I knew that if I still wanted to catch any "action" from the sunrise it had to happen quickly before the sun completely disappeared behind those gloomy clouds.

It has always amazed me how fast the sun seems to "pass" through the air during a sunrise or sunset phase. As we approached this stretch of road, the 3 impala ewes suddenly came out of the bush and crossed the road just as the sun finally started to disappear behind the thicker clouds and all I could do was to veer off the road in an attempt to alight the antelope with the disappearing sun, but still get the shot with the impalas on the road. I had time for this one shot only as the impalas skedaddled into the bushes on the other side of the road, the sun ducked in behind the clouds and went dark, and the moment vamoosed completely leaving me feeling rather done in that the moment couldn't linger just a while longer for another shot.

After the holiday, when I downloaded the photos onto my PC and Anna and I reviewed the results, I am happy to say that my sentiment of feeling done in disappeared at the same rate as the sun departed on that specific day when I captured this shot. To say the least I was quite pleased with the result of the "snapshot". I sincerely hope you think so too.

When I opened the file in PhotoShop CS2 I was contemplating on how to tackle the PP and what should I do with the photo. I cropped the file a little bit on the left and then I clicked on the "Auto Levels" tab (just for a curiosity test). The colours that you see here is entirely the result from that action and of course courtesy of the Bushveld sunrise. The only other PP was to brighten the darkish lower area with the "Shadows & Highlights" function set at default settings, adding +7 "Saturation", and 68% of "USM" sharpening at 0.3 radius

Hi Loot,
Congratulations with your 2nd TN anniversary, it has been
a great time for us here on tn since become a member.
Your your beautiful pictures, very good and decent comments written with good portion of humour are valued by all and I'm also proud to call you friend.

About the picture, it's beautiful, well composed with lovely colours.
Beautiful work, my friend.

Dearest Loot
Congratulations on your 2nd anniversary on Trek Nature. You are really going from strength to strength and your portfolio fills up with stunning photos like this Skukuza sunrise. I would like to use this opportunity to thank you for all your input in this wonderful site. I am sure many members will agree with me on this. As our friend Aaltjie many times made mention of that you will always give your best and you do not mind to share your knowledge and advice. I agree 100% with him.

This photo is pretty near perfect. A magnificent portrayal of the ambience and the tranquility of the morning, it gives me the feeling of awakening. A very peaceful and relaxing scene to look at, the striking soft colours beautifully captured. The three impala ewes add a special touch to this wonderful photo and rounds of this special moment. It looks like a piece of artwork. Yes indeed a masterpiece of artwork, by the master of Creations.
Thanks for sharing. It was lovely to think back and remember our holiday, as well as this specific day in the Kruger Park.
Lots of love

"Oh, the beauty of a sunrise
What a feast for human eyes!
As the new day's just beginning,
Lift your head up to the skies
There, a portion of God's heaven
Shines for all mankind to see
Glory to God in the highest,
Through time and eternity"

Hi Loot, has it been two years already?!
I like what you've done skewing the color with the AL function of PS. It's created a "surreal" effect that's creative and grabs the viewers interest.
Life will have its ups & downs..
Let's "shoot" (PTP) for more of the "ups" this year, what do you say? :)

Congratulations to your anniversary! And you celebrate it with a bang. Apt pp - very effective - even if it might represent the actual colors - it's probably more impressive with what the Autolevel function did. A great moment captured!
Cheers, Klaus

Hello Loot,
We too celebrate not only your second anniversary, but your recovery as well. With your amazing photography and equally amazing gift of writing you have enriched this wonderful site. Hello Loot

Hi Loot.
Unbelievable scene Simply amazing subject and colour tones. All is wonderful Impressive path, attractive animals, terrific sun and clouds, mysterious trees and bushes. Bravo, dear friend. Amazing rare picture.

My heart congratulations on second year here, with us, your friends. I want to wish your strong health and good spirits.

Hi Loot,
So good to be here and be able to share this moment with your second anniversary picture.
The scene is pretty amazing, the 3 deers on that curved path, the tree's silhouettes against that stunning sky.
The PP work here produced a very particular resultm kind of an expressionist one.
My compliments for the picture and for this couple of year among us.
Hope you take care yourself and bring to this site more of your unique work.
Warm regards,

Hello Loot,
The colors are magnificent here at sunrise! The silhouettes of the Impala are a perfect fit with the strong morning colors. Excellent capture, and congrat's on the 2nd...

Magnificent view you've captured here from an excellent POV. The colours are absolutely stunning!

Mooi foto

Hi Loot

Surreal...yes I'd be very happy with this result too.
Sorry hear of your attacking heart early last year, I know how you feel; as we get older bits and pieces don't quite work like they used to at 20. Oh well, at least (as you say) we can still hold a camera and go click. Life is short, enjoy every momment as if its your last my friend.

Let me say Loot, that I really enjoy your Afican shots (and now I have to look at Anna's too). It's somewhere I'd like to go one day (so many palces...). But for now, I eagerly await your next image. Time doesn't allow me to comment on every one, but believe me I look at them all and drool. Sometimes I laugh (to myself), how bizarre to go to a wildlife reserve and not be allowed out of your vehicle else you'll be eaten!!! Here in Oz, you can go just about anywhere and the worst you'll see is a snake slithering away hoping you didn't see it. Well perhaps I wouldn't swim in a crocodile infested lagoon in the north of the country, but you get the idea.
Anyway, I hope your "downs" are few this year and you populate TN with many stunning images of a truely exotic landscape.

Best wishes

Hello Loot
Surrealistic, artful, and very creative. All in all a surprisingly beautiful result you obtained from the particular processing approach. You had a quick eye and mind to pull off the road to achieve this specific alignment and get this cracker of a photo. The twist in colour turned this probably "normal" sunrise into quite an eye catching, graphic, and spectacularly colourful illustration. The intense yellow fireball that peeps out below that vivid blue cloud bank and hanging at a slightly off centre position in the vibrant pink sky is in stark contrast to the strip of dark vegetation lining the side of the road. As you have taught me through many of the critiques you have done, you practiced what you preached, by dividing the photo into 3 equal zones and then you also used the road to split the dark bottom part into triangles which increased the attraction of the image. A very neat package indeed and a pleasure to have seen.

PS. Not as an after thought, but with sincere intent I wish you a happy anniversary and may we still have the pleasure of many eventful photographic years that you will share with us.

Dear Loot
Time really flies. 2 Years for you on Trek Nature and what an awesome time it has been for me. I can only imagine how you must feel. What a lovely way to celebrate your anniversary with this spectacular photo. The view really touches my heart and I got quite emotional, looking at this entire magnificence. You have surely outdone yourself with this photograph. You have managed to capture a very special moment, being at the right place on the right time. A delectable picture, with bright pinkish-purple colours on the horizon. I am sure this sky came from another globe! Really fantastic! Is looking at nature not wonderful and a new experience everytime?
Warmest regards

WOW!! Those colours!! And those tame impalas you positioned in just the 'right' place - well done Loot!!

Hello Loot,
I was reading your interesting notes this morning and I am in many ways agree with your opinion and firm believe on how this site should be treated. It is rather abusing if this is treated as photo dumping as there are many other sites where one can do that. I am new here and I already can tell about the characters of the members here.

I was reading the notes here with interest and anticipation. I like the anecdote style writing that you have attached to this picture. Very well written and I am happy that you have coped the attack very well and I'm wishing you your second annivessary here in Trek Nature.

And the picture:

Rather saturated and the colors are amazingly rather unreal. I'm saying this in a positive manner because that can happen during sunrise and sunset which will never happen in the same manner twice.
The diagonal road take care of the perspective and the inclusion of the foliage on the left is useful. The crossing is very timely captured and the bush with the back light creates a wonderful looking horizon against that stunning sky.

I'm glad you did find your way to my dragonfly and the workshop offered is very well appreciated.

Thanks again!!

Best regards,

Hello Loot

Baie, baie mooi.

Hi Loot,
Firstly, thanks you for your kind words on my last posting. I think your landscape here is anything but boring or flat - in fact i find it quite amazing!
The colours here are sublime, and completely unique to this kind of environemnet i would imagine. Almost ethereal...
As for the composition, it seems pretty much perfect. The road is very well placed to add depth, horizon is where it should be (according to the rule of thirds anyway!) and you even have those three fantastic sillouettes...this shot is dripping with Africa!!
Very well done, i would love to see more landscapes from you...oh, and happy 2nd Anniversary on TN, i had mine last week too...time flies when you're having fun eh?

Hello Loot,

Happy anniversary on TN my friend... And I should say that you bring so much humanity to this site, so much friendship, so much participation that I really wish you (and us ;-) ) many many years here!!! :-)

This picture is awesome with magnificient colors! One day, I promise to visit Kruger Park which seems so wonderful!!!

Thanks to you one more time, my friend!!!

My Dear Loot,
Congratulations with you 2nd anniversary. lets hope we both may grow very old on this wonderful site. I do hope they will all be filled with many ups and no downs.

I like the powerful colors of the sunset and the three silhouttes of the animals. I am not that sure about the PP work, since it did create a slight artificial look. But, I do understand the reason and for that appreciate the result.

Hello Loot
Félicitation pour ton 2iême anniversaire sur le site et je t'en souhaite plusieurs autres et c'est un plaisir de te lire.

Hello Loot

Congratulations on two years here on TN.
This is an artistic presentation. The colours are amazing.
The composition is wonderful. The silhouettes against that sky is fantastic.
I appreciate your postings, and how much effort you put into this site.I also commend you for the way you inject your perspective, humour and personal experience into each of your postings.
You are both a mentor and educator, and done in such a friendly manner.

Hi Loot,
Congratulations on the 2nd anniversary with hopes of great many more to come. I sincerely hope that you are ok and wish the best for your health. The sunset is beautiful, I love that purple and pink two toned sky along with the silhouetts are very pleasing to the eye. Well done Dude from Africa. :)

Dear Loot,
spectacular moment, preserved in a cheerful way, letting "Auto Levels" do its job with a smile.
Loot, my congratulations to your 2nd anniversary. Sorry for joining in that late, have been so painfully busy over the last weeks, even months, and quite a bit worried about my continued working situation under a university management that does not allow its hard working teachers any sufficient kind of assistance for all the increasing amount of red-tape stuff getting done. Enough on that.
Loot - two years on TN, giving us so many wonderful pictures and stories, giving us wonderful moments of sharing excitement, and smiling together. Thank you, my dear friend.
All my best wishes to you!

Very nice capture if not a little over saturated. The composition is excellent and the pass of the dear a real bonus. always good to see the face of the sun in such shots. Regards Steve.

Dear Loot,
Congratulations on your Second Anniversary in TN!(I know i am a bit late with my wishes, but better late than never, isn't it?). In these two years you have delighted us all with pictures, each of them very beautiful and unique. I have always enjoyed your pictures. And you know there is one more thing i like about your posts. It's the notes. They are all very informative and very amusing to read.Like this post. It's a beautiful picture with very vibrant colours. And you have captured the moment perfectly wth the colours, rising sun, and the impala ewes crossing the long road.I enjoyed reading your personal experience and also the tribute to TN. Thanks a lot Loot for your wonderful picture and may God bless you with many more years in TN.

Extraordinarily beautiful shot! The colours look magical. It is true that 'auto levels' did the colours,.. but it could not have done it if the actual colours were far away from what is seen. The silhouette of the deer, the violet road, all look magical. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Loot !
I love the mood and the atmosphere of this picture, it's wonderful. The colors on the sky are quite amazing too, and I love how the silhouette of the trees stand out against the sky, and I love how the three little deers on the road. Composition and POV are perfect too. Very well done !

Wow! You captured this one very very well! Perhaps one of your best and my favorite of yours that I have seen so far. Everything about this photo is awesome and two big thumbs up! Well composed! Thanks for sharing this fabulous moment in Nature! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Dear Loot,
I can just say it's great, great & great landscape clicked by you. TFS.

Happy 2nd Anniversary.GREAT shot.

Friend Loot,
This one is indeed one of the BEST images on TN.
The notes too are OUTSTANDING!!!
