I have been looking for this species for years - and eventually found one sitting on a bridge, just south of Lower Sabie Camp in the Kruger NP. It was completely unconcerned at the cars queing for the hippo and buffalo - I was able to get it with my 70 - 200mm 2.8.

I am uploading earlier than usual today as I am off to Abu Dhabi for a couple of days (work), but have my laptop so hope to be uploading etc. I had originally hoped to have Horia to stay during this time - I know he is meeting up with some other TN member later this week.

The Giant Kingfisher, Megaceryle maxima, is the largest kingfisher in Africa, where it is a resident breeding bird over most of the continent south of the Sahara Desert other than the arid southwest.

There are two subspecies, M. m. maxima, found in open country, and M. m. gigantea in the rainforest. The forest race is darker, less spotted above, and more barred below than maxima, but the two forms intergrade along the forest edge zone.

Breeding is from August to January, 3-5 eggs being laid in a riverbank tunnel.

Giant Kingfisher is 42-48 cm long, with a large crest and finely spotted white on black upperparts. The male has a chestnut breast band and otherwise white underparts with dark flank barring, and the female has a white-spotted black breast band and chestnut belly.

The call is a loud wak wak wak.

This large species feeds on crabs, fish, and frogs, caught in the typical kingfisher way by a dive from a perch. The number of these birds appears to have declined, possibly as a result of pesticides.

Hello James,
As I only have an old scanned slide image of the Giant Kingfisher, nothing like as close as this, it is a joy to view this fine close capture. Great pose and POV and superb details.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

You took this picture on my birthday, James, so I'll snap it up as my favourite birthday gift :-)!
Sorry, I've been terribly busy these last few days on account of school closing for summer break and could not reciprocate to your kind critique earlier.
I must congratulate you on finally being able to capture this highly coveted subject -- Giant Kingfisher.
Needless to say, the picture is immaculate in all respects.
Thanks for sharing it and best regards.
BTW, have a nice time in Abu Dhabi!

Hi James,

What a wonderful looking bird with the black and the white specks and the touches of orange. He certainly is unusual looking. Great shot showing him in great detail. Amazing how the black eye shines against the black feathers. His head looks so big for his body! I love the opened beak and the pose.

Hi James!
There are a lot of pictures with kingfishers here on TN, but I do not remember this species. The black-white mosaic of colours (+ some orage details) makes this species very nice and original coloured. Bravo for showing something new!

preciosa captura y buen pov...
original plumaje,
bello bg.

hello James,

What absolutely stunning sharpness and details of this giant kingfisher. I love the plummage pattern!

His long beak, so necessary for catching food, seems quite out of proportion with the rest of his body and gives a humorous appearance!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
