Southern Ground Squirrels
Xerus inauris

These typical “squirrel like” critters are most frequently observed in the drier savannas and semi-deserts of Africa. There are 5 species of which two are found in SA, the Southern and Mountain Ground Squirrels. It is impossible to distinguish between the two species in the field. One can distinguish between them based on geographical location though.

They are strictly diurnal and colonial. They excavate their own burrow system, even in hard soils such as calcrete. The family sizes ranges from 5 to 30 of these critters bundled together. Females and the young remain close to the burrows but males wander from colony to colony. They frequently sit on their haunches, increasing visibility and making it easier to hold food while eating. Their bushy tails are used as sunshade when feeding.

Ground Squirrels enjoy a wide variety of plant food and excavate for roots and bulbs. Termites and insects are also eaten.

They are easily confused with Meerkat (Suricate) or the yellow mongoose where I stay.

I took a welcome break after the year end and bumped into these critters as the sun was starting to set. I watched the colony for nearly an hour before moving on. I hope you like them.

Aaah Gerhard, they're just excellent. Observing and standing as sentries... Almost in human postures.

Wow cool moment you captured. Liked the composition and warm lighting.

Hilarious! Callie, Japie and Gerhard on the look-out for new photo ops ;-))
Sorry, couldn't resist ;-)
Excellent sharpness and a lovely group pose captured. I'm wondering about the grass in the bg, did you convert to sepia, or is your grass that dry?

Hello Gerhard, lovely picture of a lovely scene and setting. The details are excellent and a very nice composition.

I hope you don't make Biltong from these...I think I've eaten too much of it!

Paul

Three excellent poses all in one photo. Good job Gerhard. They look so good standing guard and looking out for each other. And they didn't seem to see you either. The setting sun enhances the shot. Well done. Brilliant.
Yes, they are similar to Meerkats.

I love the composition and perspective of this one, especially with the shadows. It makes me smile, so cute and lovable looking. This is a really classic shot, with the symmetry of the shadows very elegant and the different poses/directions quite enchanting. Lovely.
