Little Scarlet
Crocothemis Sanguinolenta

Also known as the Small Scarlet.

They are 32-38mm in lenght with a wingspan of 57-63mm. It's range extends from SW Cape northwards across Africa to Western Asia. This species is fairly common is South Africa and often found alongside the Broad Scarlet. They freguent grass and sedge-lined margins of streams and ponds.

It is very similar to the Broad Scarlet but smaller with red pterostigma and only a modest broad abdomen. The females are mustard-coloured which makes it easy to distinguish between them.

This was taken in May 2005 and I frequent the venue quite often. I have not seen any dragons at the spot since then.

Hope you like it.

Stunning colors and details on that dragonfly shot, Gerhard. Beautiful POV and composition. Congratulations and TFS. : )

Hi Gerhard,
Great POV, compo and framing.
Different BG for it, sine most of the time we see them in greenish surroundings.

They are quite tiny Gerhard, and this is a lovely capture, So colourful and shiny, and nice and sharp too. Well shown, thank you.

Thanks Gerhard. Great image and once again a very informative note. I submitted a few images to TrekEarth but sadly most of the backslappers there add little constructive commentary with the images.
These creatures are always a challenge to get sharp throughout and still have them stand out from the background. You might even be able to improve it a little by darkening the background to the right.

Great macro Gerhard. Colorfull with very good sharpness and very good details. Very good job. WEll done

Hi Gerhard

Hi Gerhard

Nice shot. I like how they bring the wings forward. Excellent detail. Looks like it may be slightly over sharpened as I can see a halo around the tail end. Has it landed on gold? :-)

Hi Gerhard,

This is a lovely scarlet. I love the red color. Details on the scarlet are great, but I think you should have used a smaller aperture to get a wider dof. Composition and POV are great. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hello Gerhard, very nice composition, maybe you could have called it "Gone with the Wind" that starred a scarlet too! Very good details and a lovely looking Dragonfly. Nice work.

dof is good too, so is the compo.good one!

Great macro, Gerhard.

Very sharp, maybe little to much, it's a small halo round the body.
