This little African Scops Owl was roosting in the picnic site between the Malelane Gate and Jocks Camp. I am dedicating it to Anna as the Kruger is one of her favourite haunts.

Scops-owls are Strigidae (typical owls) belong to the genus Otus. Approximately 45 living species are known, but new ones are frequently recognized and unknown ones are still being discovered every few years or so, especially in Indonesia. For most of the 20th century, this genus included the American screech-owls which are now again separated in Megascops based on a range of behavioral, biogeographical, morphological and DNA sequence data.

Scops-owls in the modern sense are restricted to the Old World, except for a single North American species - the Flammulated Owl - that is only provisionally placed here and is likely to be moved out of Otus eventually. See below for details.

As usual for owls, female scops-owls are usually larger than the males of their species, with owls of both sexes being compact in size and shape. All of the birds in this genus are small and agile. Scops-owls are colored in various brownish hues, sometimes with a lighter underside and/or face, which helps to camouflage them against the bark of trees. Some are polymorphic, occurring in a greyish- and a reddish-brown morph.

Dear James
Thank you for dedicating this image of the Scops Owl to me. I have just been diagnosed with glandular fever and not feeling to bright, but seeing this guy peeping at me with its prominent "owls eyes" surely made me feel a bit better for time being. It is a lovely close approach and details are seen with great clarity, especially the beautiful patterns and markings in the feathers, and the black stripe on the forehead. The Scops Owl that stays in one of the trees at the Satara reception area is one of the main attractions to tourists staying or visiting in that camp, as it is almost always there, and during lunch times visitors stands in queues to photograph it. I also had that oppertunity but I could not get as close to it, therefore my image is not as well detailed as yours. Thanks for thinking about me and our love (both Loot and I) for the Kruger, when you made this dedication. Kind regards.
Anna

Hello James
After Cyprus, I see a post from South Africa and famous Kruger. I think you met Anna and Loot in there.
I'd like to see this beautiful place and its living things. You are lucky to see and capture such a great shot. sharpness of focus, POV/DOF and exposure great. also composition and colors. It is a great dedication to our friend Anna.
We have two owls from this genus here: O. scops and O. brucei. This must be Otus senegalensis respect to its vernacular name. They are similar to each other.
thanks for sharing it with good informative notes. best regards and have a nice weekend,
Ahmet
