[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hover Flies can be found almost everywhere. As soon as there are flowers in your garden, you will start to notice these flies. Gardeners should learn to recognize them because they are both pollinator and aphid eater.

Hover Flies vary from tiny, often black and shiny flies to large flies that have a remarkable resemblance to bees or wasps. Early in spring, the small dark species are noticeable, and the large bee-like ones becoming more common as summer progresses. The characteristic that all Hover Flies share is their rapid hovering flight. You often see them hovering a patch of sunlight, and then dart to investigate a flower.

Although many look like bees, the hovering flight gives them away. Other clues are two wings rather than four (although this is sometimes hard to discern) and the bulbous eyes characteristic of flies. And, since they are flies, they do not sting.

This shot was taken at late afternoon on my terrace using RAW format and ISO160 settings.

Breathtaking, superbly composed macro shot, with very good use of flash (colors even seem natural). Plenty of details on the insect and on the plant, excellent background blur - instead of more words I simply bookmark the pic as one of my favorites. Tfs this treasure.

an very good macro shot with subup sharpness, detais and dof.
Nice dark bg.
Fine colours.
I am searching for mistakes but I cant find it.
Maybe the light on the branche (white) but that's unfair.

Dear George!

Your picture is as impressive as beautiful. The superb sharpness reveals rich details and allows the viewer to get a complete overview about the insect's cheracteristics. You also have well managed the artificial light and the result is that the effects of the flash are almost inexistant.

Another of your "spectacular" fly! ... Impeccable!
The details are quite significant, can be counted one by one the tiny hairs on the fly! I like very much the use of flash and how the colors have remained. Deserves to be named the cut, is a good decision have allowed comple whole view of the inflorescence where the fly is posed.

You do see flies, a pleasure!

Hello George,
Excellent picture of this tiny Hoverfly which you show here in a fine composition and strong colors. The flash obviously helps to bring out every single detail. I also like the fine grey background which gives an ideal contrast to the plant and the fly. Well done again!

Good morning George,
A nice macro showing in detail the features from a lateral POV. The colours and lighting are superb with good use of flash without producing a 'night-time effect' for this day-flying insect and the composition is excellent.
Maybe this is a little over-sharpened, the hairs appearing too much white, but that is a small point!
