Common Moorhen

Moorhen pairs share the task of feeding their chicks. Moorhen chicks stay close by their parents for about three weeks. When they leave the nest they immediately start to forage for themselves though mum and dad still spend all their time feeding them. Whilst small they are very vulnerable to predation and mortality can be high. Rats and stoats are particularly partial to a young moorhen chick. The parents protect their chicks with amazing aggression. They have even been seen to drown young ducklings that get too close to their brood. As they get bigger they are fed less by their parents and more by themselves. Their diet consists of aquatic vegetation, seeds, fruit, grasses, insects, snails and worms.

Great capture George, love your composition on this. Great details and I love these three. Very well done. Those are very difficult to photograph.Best regards Siggi

Hi George,

Good evening MF! Definitely a better than the last one. :) Truly excellent presentation of the moorhen chick trio, superb colors, DoF and sharpness. My idea about how to improve the photo: I should have cropped more from the out of focus foreground. It's probably a personal way of thinking I don't like oof foregrounds - practising macro photography mostly I've done that mistake so many times. Probably this is the reason why it vexes my sensitive eyes. Of course a fantastic photo in every other way. Bravo.

Now, just before Christmas I also should like to thank you for helping me in photography with your useful critiques and advices - and also thank you for strengthening me in being faithful to myself, and for the courage to tell what I really think, even if everyone's against me. Either you, or me, or both of us have to go, you'll be missed MF.

I wish you & your loved ones a very happy Christmas. Is your little son called Peter like mine? :) You can see him here, on this workshop photo if interested. He's my younger son, a real fungi and trekking fanatic. :)

Friendly regards, László

Hello George,
Nice to see that you are back! Very vivid and funny shot of these three little chicks in a row..a lot of energy in them already. Original posting presented with excellent sharpness and good composition and well chosen point of view. The one at the right seems to be the fastest!
Thanks for this natural and pleasant picture.
