blacksmith plover

The wings of both male and female plovers have a carpal spur,
a sharp bony protrusion from the front mid-point of the wing, difficult to see when
the wings are folded. This is used for fighting off intruders and defending their
nesting territory and young.
Blacksmith plovers are waterbirds, attracted to even small puddles. When disturbed,
they make a very loud metallic clink that resembles the sound of hammering metal,
giving them their common name. These birds are usually found alone or in pairs but
will occasionally congregate with other plovers, especially during drought. Some
blacksmith plovers have adapted to human environments, such as farms and
suburbs, where irrigation provides new wet areas to colonize.

Hello George,
An outstanding image of this very beautiful bird which has an unusual bony protrusion coming from it's breast. I like the way you were able to post the inset which points out this unique part of it's anatomy.
The contrasting black and white plumage is accented by it's bright red eye. Wonderful low POV and showing exceptional detail and gorgeous coloration. Very informative notes. Superb shot!!

Hello George
very interesting and very beautiful lapwing. Spur-winged Plover or Lapwing (Vanellus (Haplopterus) spinus) present in here, even if in our campus. It is similar to this with exception colors. It has spur at same point of wings, but shorter. True spur-winged must be yours. You greatly captured and presented. Thanks for sharing. All the best

Hello George,
Very interesting posting! You show something very special which seems to be unique in the bird-world. As usual excellent presentation and a most funny expression of the bird here.
Thanks too for your appreciation of my last picture. I was aware of some lacks, you are right for that. But most probably no new Lens for Christmas, they are quite expensiv!
Take care
