The ladybird (Coccinellidae) pictured here spent some time "playing" in the leaves. It is possible that the time was spent hunting but I did not see any such action. This was taken next to our house just before the rain (and almost unmentionable thunder) started at 17:19.

The vivid red-and-black colouring acts as warning (sonetimes also yellow and black). The one depicted here is carnivorous and lives of aphids and scale insects.

One subfamily (Epilachninae) are vegetarian. These are usually duller in colour.

The autumn colours of the dry leaves, together with the warmth of the "lady" makes this a worthwhile picture. The worth of a photograph is not always only in the detail of the subject - a mistake many photographers with access to modern technology make. TFS
