I Took this juvenile Jackal Buzzard in the World of Birds outside Houtbay in the Cape province. This bird was very inquisitive and I have about 30 shots with his head in strange positions as he was looking at me and the camera setup. Probably feeling sorry for me.

He was sitting in deep dark shade and I had to raise the ISO to 400. He was not sitting still and I could not shoot below 1/60 therefor the setting of f/5.6.

More info on the Jackal Buzzard (152)

A stocky, medium-sized raptor with a dark grey head and back which contrasts with the dark rufous or chestnut breast. Size 55-60cm - larger than a Guineafowl. Afrikaans: Rooiborsjakkalsvoel

Adult Jackal Buzzards have a dark, slate-grey head, throat and back. The breast is usually dark rufous- or chestnut-brown although Namibian birds often show a whitish breast. The belly is mottled black-and-white and the tail is a rich, red-brown. The secondaries (the inner flight feathers of the wings) are white, finely barred and broadly tipped with back, creating a characteristic white panel across the folded wing. In flight, the bird shows broad, rounded wings and a short tail.
The blackish under-wing coverts contrast with the pale flight feathers - the black tips creating a broad black trailing edge to the wing. The bill is short with a sharp, hooked tip to the upper mandible. It is black, and the cere (the bare skin at the base of the bill), legs and feet yellow.

This is a species of mountainous and hilly terrain, and is usually seen singly or in pairs. It commonly sits on telephone poles and tends to perch with a very upright posture. Jackal Buzzards regularly hover - using headwinds or up-draughts along cliffs or ridges to stay aloft. This is one of the largest raptors that can do this.

The diet consists of small mammals, birds, reptiles (including snakes), insects and carrion.

The call is a loud, Jackal-like yelping keow, kyaa-ka-ka-ka.

As with many other raptors, it breeds mainly in the winter months (May - October). The nest is a bulky pile of sticks, usually placed on a ledge of a cliff or, more rarely, in a tree

Great Japie.
You catch him very well.
ISO 400 is no problem with a 300D, no noise up to ISO400.
Good details , nice colours and good composition.
Great note.
Very well done.

I'm breathless...that's one, if not the best Bird of Prey headshots on TN. Fantastic, well done Japie.

Another awesome capture! Great plumage and colours on this character. Thanks for sharing.

Admirable nitidez y agudeza Japie.
Los finos detalles de su plumaje pueden verse con total facilidad.
Bello colorido con un POV maravilloso al igual que el DOF logrado.
Gran nota tambien.

Admirable clearness and sharpness Japie.
The fine details of their plumage can be seen with total facility.
Beautiful colorful with a wonderful POV like the obtained DOF.
Great note also.

Japie, Superb clarity, detail & sharpness seen! I like the angle of the shot very much also. BG contrasts very well. That eye detail..That eyelid or ridge seems to give this Jackel Buzzard an almost sad look! Very well done!

Another superb shot! The detail captured is unbelievable and I believe this is one of the best rapture shots Iíve seen in a long time. Donít let Bird and Birding get a hold of this; they might make you an offer ;-). Do you have a full size shot? Iíd like to have a look at it.

Very impressive capture Japie. Excellent exposure terrific sharpness and detail. Superb.

Hi japie, good shot, not much contrast but the details make it up!
especialy the ones on the eye, the colours are good, very clear, good capture of the different tones of black.
well done!

A fabulous capture.
Excellent detail,the eye especially.
Superb,well done!

What a beautiful portrait, Japie. Rich colors on the light and shade side, very artistic. It comes to the point where photography fits in with painting. A very delicate texture, showing all the subtle hues visible in those thin feathers. Perfect background.

Goeie grond! This is fantastic Japie. I thought my mugshots were nice until this one. Simply the best. Really!

Ek wil net sÍ, die turaco en duif is BAIE mooi. This one is moody, excellent, down to the wet bill. This is not the guy you sent me, it is better! Mooi man!

Absolutely superb!!! Baie mooi, Japie. I like the light just where it counts. Very good work.

Good shot! I really love the piercing detail in the eye here, and the shot is excellent overall too - DOF/focus/lighting are all good. My only concern is that there's a bit of noise - not bad on the bird, but slightly distracting in bokeh. Also you appear to have a couple of hot pixels - one blue (just to the left of the beak tip) and one red (in the feathers), it might be worth seeing if Canon can remap those for you - I don't have any that are visible with this sort of shutter speed on my 10D... Informative note too, as usual! Very nicely captured :-D

P.S. I've posted a Workshop for you reducing the noise, see what you think!

Stunning, the colours are majestic, the subject great. Good notes.
This is the best I've seen on TN yet.

Was this taken in a Zoo?
