[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The female ostrich is a drab, grey brown bird with off-white wings, well adapted to melt into the open veld, especially during the winter months when she & the dry, leafless bush have much in common. On the other hand, the male is a handsome dude, dressed in a black tuxedo with a large, chestnut tail, a grey neck & the wings are predominantly white. In the breeding season, which is now, the front of the legs turns a pinkish-red colour, complimented by a red bill, as can be seen on the picture. The ostrich has the largest eyes in the world of all animals on an eye to head size ratio. The call is a leonine booming roar, uttered at night and it can be heard for several kilometres. 24 normal eggs go into one ostrich egg, which weighs around 1,5 kg. The only true ostriches in SA are found in the Kalahari in SA, the rest are all descended from captive stock bred for the feather trade during the previous century. They can run up to 70 km/h and are capable of killing man or dog with their formidable claw on the toes. Taken in the Lion & Rhino Park in Muldersdrift.
Nikon D70 & Sigma 120-300 f2.8 & 2X converter @ 600 mm; ISO 200, -0,7 EV; 1/500 @ f8; i-TTL off camera flash; Bean bag on window; no cropping, Levels lighter; reduced to size and USM, faded to overlay to suit. Enjoy.

This could have been a petrol pump attendant looking through window "Leaded or unleaded meneer?" When we spoke you mentioned about impact, and this shot has lots of it! Great DOF and sharpness and this babe withthe Sandton eyes.

Primer plano del hermoso pajarraco.
Excelente DOF y POV... colores exactos.
Me gusta!

Close up of the beautiful large ugly bird.
Excellent DOF and POV... exact colors.
I like me!

Great picture with very good details, excellent exposure.
By the way 600 mm on the D70 is about 900 mm !!! because of the sensor factor.

Callie I love the way she enters the frame and snakes her way across the picture to look out at us so personally.

Great portrait with excellent colors and dof..Excellent !!

Wonderful shot, Callie. Perfect "in-camera-cropping" to have this distinctive posing of the ostrich's head in your frame. I like how the sunlight enhances the details of the plumage, and the posing has something funny and at the same time endearing to it. Very nice.

Quess who dropped in? Lovely composition. This is what makes your photos special to me. You are truely a master of the compo. Thanx for sharing.

Great framing! I love how her neck and head come from an unexpected angle. Terrific shot and description, too.

Excellent and original angle of the "struisvogel", wonderful composing of you, Cal !

Call in the plumber.. Oh, this *is* the plumber ;-))) Very good angle on this chap with good colours, light and DOF + background nicely oof.

Excellent Callie. I love that look and the cropping is just perfect.

nice image, I like the neck which is bent so that you cant see the body, very good dof here and the sharp details too

I have added her to my humerous theme folder. Thanks for the great photo and the chuckle. :o)
God's best,

Great title, Callie! I like the humorous way you've catched this big bird. There is an ostrich couple and a bunch of emu's in the neighbourhood, but I never thought catching them like that. Your framing is superb, and you've got the animal expression pretty well. Bravo!

Nice shot. Good composition and colors. Like the title of the picture. Excellent notes. For me as a new owner of the D70 is nice to read the technincal info about this shot. Especially since I'm currently is looking for a telezoom lens to buy.

Unusual shot of a somewhat unusual bird, which proves that you don't have to take the whole thing to make a great picture!

Wow. That's just awesome. I can't believe how sharp it is. I had a really hard time photographing ostriches on our safari in Botswana - they were super skittish and ran pretty much at the first sight of us.

I love the way you have the eye centered just to the left. Absolutely great!

j'en ai souvent vu, mai j'avoue que cette prise est très originale! centrée à gauche et devant ce flou, on croirait qu'elle vient de nul part...c'est vraiment une réussite!
