[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In this second from last post of the Crested Barbet, you see a more frontal view of the bird, clearly showing-off his bib. You can see that he is happy & contented, the tummy is full, it is late afternoon, he is ready for bed. The better you know your subject, the more are you able to predict what it may do. Barbets in SA range from 9 cm for the Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird to the 24 cm of the Crested Barbet. Colouring is mostly pied, with red or yellow on the forehead. Some has a slight green tinge. Only the Crested Barbet has this riotous mix and match plumage of, well, you have seen by now, reds, yellows, blacks & whites. There is a similar Barbet in East Africa, that resembles the Crested Barbet in colour, but without the black & white. Because this bird is never still, except when he is content, and then he is still looking around, he makes for a difficult photographic subject. The feathers are mostly fluffed, and the intermingling of the colours gives the feathers an overall soft look, which is most probably how he was designed, to melt into his environment. A shaggy crest, a yellow face speckled in red, yellow underparts and a brad, black breast band are diagnostic; a common resident to woodland savannah, riverine forest and residential gardens, like mine, where he is the King. Shot in Krugersdorp Private Game Reserve in the aviary; ISO 200; Nikon D70; Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens and 2X converter; 1/250 @ F8 @ -0,7 EV; Aperture Mode; no flash, just late sunlight; Pattern Metering Mode; Manfrotto Tripod and Wimberley head; little cropping; bit of USM and Hue & saturation brightness; reduced to Site size. Focal length 600 mm. All comments welcomed and appreciated.

Lovely shot Callie,
Technical is it very good, I like the composition, and the colours, This is for sure not an easy shot. Great job you did Callie

Very nice Callie like the other 2 spot on , keep them coming.

A very good photographic capture with a beautiful bird which is completely unknown for me. The light of the beginning of evening gives a dominant colouring which accentuates its camouflage compared to the background. Admittedly the colors are perfect, but I carried out a WS for better isolating it from the bottom.

Yes this really looks to be a cozy setting for the guy to enjoy. Nice how in your compo he is embedded between the branches without our view of his beautiful plumage being obscured. Very good, and I also like Saïd's WS.

This is one stuffed bird, ready for a nap. Beautifully framed with your usual definition. Very well taken

Another excellent capture of this beautiful bird Callie and I sure like the composition with the bird in the side of the picture instead of the centre. Well done.
