Redbilled Oxpecker (Buphagus erythrorhynchus)

This picture was taken close to Berg-en-dal in the Kruger National Park. Here it is seen on the back of an Impala.

Description:

The Redbilled Oxpecker is about 9 inches (22 cm) long. It has a short, thick, red bill. The eyes are red and are surrounded by large, bright-yellow circles. The head, neck, wings, and tail are brown-gray; the undersides are pale yellow.

Diet:

The Redbilled Oxpecker eats its host's skin parasites (like ticks and fleas), bothersome flies, and dead host skin. The oxpecker eats hundreds of ticks and flies each day. The oxpecker and its host mammal are symbionts (two different species who benefit from living together).

Distribution in Southern Africa:

Common in game reserves, but they can be rare where farming takes place due to livestock being dipped against parasites.

Eggs and Nests:

The Redbilled Oxpecker's nest is a hole in a tree (they do not form the hole, but find one). Females lay 1-5 eggs in each clutch. Both parents incubate the eggs.

Hello Jan.
Brilliant shot! Excellent sharpness, perfect exposure, impeccable composition and, of course, great subject. Perhaps removing the grass stemming from the bird's back wouldn't be a bad idea. Congratulations,
Mark

Hello Jan Hendrik
Pragtig my maat. Definitively one of the better photos I ever saw of this lovely bird. That yellow, red and black eye almost looks like the colours on a WWII war plane.
The composition is excellent, the colours are stunning, the details are amazing, the BG is well removed and OOF thus enhancing and complimenting the bird very well, and the exposure was absolutely perfect.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Gosh Jan, Everything looks fantastic :)

Great to to see this nice bird on an Impala. Next time I want to see the Impala ;-) Colors, exposure, DOF and sharpness are very good ! I like the bird and its pose.
Congratulations Jan and thanks for sharing.

Jan,

Well composed pic of the Oxpecker. The pic is Sharp, detailed with a good POV, DOF and BG. It is not always easy to get this close to them and not have them twitching all the time causing blurring. TFS,
Sheriff
