Toco toucan
Ramphastos toco

Found in the wild in: Guiana, Brazil, N. Argentina. Their diet in the wild consists of small fruits , bird eggs, rodents, and insects.

The Toco is the largest of the toucan family with a large lightweight beak and a body with a length of 60cm (25"). Its large beak is full of "a combination of bright colors like blue, yellow, red, and orange". However, the body may be mostly black with one or two other colors on it like red and orange. These bright colors on the beak and body may be use to attract the toucan's mates. The large beak also has a narrow tongue use for eating small fruits and insects off trees; consequently, because of its large beak and body form, the Toco toucan is a poor flier and spends most of its time in hollow trees.

While spending most of their time in hollow trees, the Toco toucans live in small flocks within which they mate. The Tocos may, "mate once a year like most toucans, and build a their nest in hollow trees". In the nest the female lays two to four white eggs. After the eggs hatch the parents will care for the young for about 8 weeks.

A strange phenomena that toucans have in the wild is deafening each other while they are in small flocks. For instance, when they see a bird of prey, "they gather about it in a jeering band". Therefore, by doing this they scare off the predator, but deafening themselves.

Another special adaptation that toucans have is that when they sleep they but the beak on the back and close it with the wings. The bird then appears only black at night when sleeping.

This shot was taken at a bird park. The Toco was part of the show. He flies freely around the park without any constrains what so ever. I have never seen one before and all the colours suited the festive season just nicely I think.

All the best for 2005 for all of my friends on the site. May you have the best shooting conditions through out the year. :)

Perfect, I had to look twice to see if this was doctored. Toco is funny looking guy. Detailed and I'm glad your flash didn't work. The exposer is just right.
Well done on this composition.

Spectuacular shot Gerhard. The colours and sharpness are absolutely amazing. It's quite funny as he looks as though he's sprinting. Take care, Don.

This fellow looks like a clown running and jumping. Excellent colours and composition. Very crisp and clear. Well done.

A great winner here Gerhard! It's funny (well inspired title too :-)), unusual to see this splendid bird jumping like a crazy clown. Action is caught at the right moment, the POV showing just the side adding to the comic effect. It's like a cartoon, nearly unreal. Could become an add or a poster. A splendid moment, and a natural favorite! All the best to you too for 2005.

Beautiful Lollipop bird!
Gerhard - I wish you and Charmane only he very best to for 2005 as well - May the prosperity bore you!
A bird on my wish list, and then you make it walk on thin air - jus not fair!
Hope to have you back soon - want to post some creepy crawlies for you and Paul

Hello Gerhard, I have also been away some time, and we seem to return togheter...
A very funny shot you got, it looks irreal with this timing and colours, like a cartoon or something like that. At first I was very surprised to see this in SA, until I read your note, then I realized this is a cautive one.
Thanks for your wishes, the same to you, I am realy proud of sharing my modest images with kind people like you.

Seems like you caught him on the hop Gerhard. Fantastic looking bird with that beak. The colours are superb. Great post.

Great, just great.
You di a great job getting the right moment, there is a good amount of detail, maybe the body is a little burt (see below) while the POV and DOF are perfect.
Maybe you applied a little too much contrast in PP, which has burnt the black of the body, but this just doesn't subtract any value to the photo.

A mostly notable shot!
Samuel

Beautiful shot. Nice detail and perfect focus. The block backround is a nice contrast to the colorful bird.

Great action shot.

I love the intensity of the bird's colours, a feature I love about the Canon EOS series. The amount of light is perfect. The angles and lines in the stones are a very interesting contrast to the subject's curved outline. Excellent work!
