The most ironic thing about this photo is that I took it on April Fools Day. Didn't realise that till now. At first I thought this was a bee. I guess the joke's on me.

Eristalinus Taeniops
Lesser Drone Fly

Very similar to the Honey bee in size and appearance (abdomen stripes) but lacks a sting and has its eyes with characteristical zig-zag stripes. Larva found in stagnant water. Resembles Drone fly but slightly smaller (13mm)

Hello Jannie,
to be or not a bee? Clearly, as you note it's a hoverfly. The picture is pretty good showing fine details of the eyes, the body and the wings and also of the small characteristic antennae. Nice light and natural colours.

anyway shakespeare would think about "to bee", it's a wonderful shot. I love the striped eyes so much, I've never seen a fly with such eyes, it's beautiful, I like it, thanks
