Green Backed Heron ( Afrikaans - Groenrugreier)
Butorides striatus.

A less common Heron according to Keneth Newman " What's that Bird?"

I believe this one to be a juvenile, hence the colours not yet showing but stand to be corrected.

- greenish grey back with black crown
- 41cm long
- legs and beak yellow underneath
- Juveniles dark brown with white markings

Fish, insects and other small vertebrates and invertebrates. Fish is relative to ease of obtaining them.

Where found:
The eastern coast of South Afica as well as The north eastern parts of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the Caprivi.

The birds slowly crouch and wait for food to come by. Their neck is like the shaft of a javelin and quickly prey is speared. Flight is rapid with deep wing beats. Flies with neck semi-extended. Some green-backs have been seen dropping bait of insects into the water and waiting for minnows to feed before having lunch.

They spend most of their time next to thickly bushed water edges waiting on a dead branch. Will fly up into the trees if scared threatened.

Well Willie this is an unusual looking bird it has beautiful markings throughout. The focus is a little softer than usual but thats the limitation of the camcorder. Interesting read and overall a good post.

Willie, Composed well with a nice one-leg-up balancing pose. Great notes..TFS!

Hi Willy,
Yep, Juvenile Scaly, well done, one cannot miss that evil eye. Nice pose too. Mooi man.

Very nice Willie.
Good composition, POV, colours and details.
Very good note. Very well done.

Hi Willie, I'm not an expert on these matters, but I wasn't sure of the ID on this one and did a bit of research. This does look a lot like a juvenile heron, but after comparing all the images I've browsed,I wondered whether this might not rather be an American Bittern.
I feel a bit cheeky suggesting this after Callies confirmation (I'm not even from South Africa) but have a look at some Bittern pics on Gooogle images, then let me know what you think.
A very good photo in any case. TFS. Steve.

Willie, nice shot of this Heron. The detail and framing are good. A nice job on the backround to blur what appears to be screening.

Nice shot Willie,
Good composition, and nice one legged pose.
Good notes.
Thanks for posting

Willie, nice pose and great POV. To me, the bird is a little funny, and that's great too.

Very good composition.

Not using the usual comments about the quality of the video camera I think it's a very good shot. The composition is excellent and I love the pose of the bird.

I don't know why, but it looks so sad for me. Great bird in great pose. I think BG should be more blurred Willie.

Less common is an understatement. I have never seen one before. Robert's states it as "uncommon" in central "Old" Transvaal, common in Limpopo area. Great shot Willie. And it's a Juvi...

Nice! I wish I had such birds in my 'backyard'. :) Wonderful shot, good colors, POV and composition. Focus is indeed a little soft or is it my eyesight? Well done anyway.

Bonne prise de vue et belle composition. Le sujet est bien cadré, couleurs bonne. Juste un petit flou. Félicitation et bonne journée.

Well done on this capture. Herons are an interesting bird. I like to observe them. Facinating.

Very good point of view for this heron. Well captured with good focus and blurred background. Very well done Willie,

Interesting bird: looks a bit like our green heron. I red notes about your cam and your job. First I hope you get a job as soon as you can. Second I hope you will be able to get a better camera to shoot your already very good pictures.
Excellent work on this heron Willie!

Good color:)
