Southern Giraffe
Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa

The name Giraffe is derived from the Arabic word “Xirapha” which translates as “one who walks swiftly”.

This is the worlds tallest animal. There are nine subspecies of Giraffe. Distinction is based on patterns of the patterning and its distribution in Africa. Some areas overlap making identification very difficult. Giraffe subspecies are:

West African Giraffe (G.c. peralta)
Kordofan Giraffe (G.c. antiquorum)
Nubia Giraffe (G.c. camelopardalis)
Reticulated Giraffe (G.c. reticulata)
Rothschild’s or Baringo Giraffe (G.c. rothschildi)
Maasai or Kenyan Giraffe (G.c. tippelskirchi)
Thornicroft’s Giraffe (G.c. thornicrofti)
Southern Giraffe (G.c. girrafa)
Angolan Giraffe (G.c. angolensis)

Although still abundant in numerous savanna conservation areas these animals have disappeared from many regions within their former range. They are also hunted for their meat, tough hides and tails, the latter being used as fly whisks and the tail hairs for plaiting bracelets.

I have always wanted to get a decent Giraffe photo but they are very difficult to get into a frame. The compositions are also very difficult for me. Then one has to struggle to get a decent background. I was lucky to get this one in this surrounding. I hope you like it.

Mooi langnek, Gerhard! Nice walking pose of this unicorn - see the way his ear is making a horn on his forhead!
Nice clouds too, just the old nit of the eye and the catchlight, you handled the exposure well!
PS, what about N'korro, I MUST book!

Very good photo Gerardt,
It is an amazing shot, very good action, great contrast with the blue sky, personal I had crop a little piece extra of that blue sky that would made the giraffe higher, very good job

I honestly never knew there were so many Giraffes! It's a super shot with a nice POV, the composition with the puffy cloud in teh blue sky and the layers of dry and green grass are great. I don't think Japie and I will see anything like this on saturday, I hope we'll get something.

Nice shot Gerhard.

Perfect! This is an excellent shot. Great composition and sharp details. TFP

I love this animal Gerhard and I have a few shots of them but this completely blows any of mine out of the water. Excellent capture and straight into my favorites...very well done.

Gerhard, Like this very much! The Giraffe has been shot in a perfect setting and your chosen POV has helped to maximize the difficult "fit" within the frame. Exceptional sharpness, detail & colors..I think the slight angle of the near horizon helps to make it a great one also.. Very well done my friend!

Now I know tham my 160 cm isn' so bad. Especialy because of clothes.

Perfect composition and great pose. I'd push a bit the contrast.
Very well done.

Gerhard, I didn't know they were so difficul to shoot. You did a great job. The composition is really very nice, with the blue sky performing a great contrast.

I also like POV and DOF - f/10 worked well.

Thanks for the teachings on your note.
